A son who turns 25 while the file is still sitting on a consulate desk is no longer a child on that file. That is the deadline most households discover after they have already booked the tickets.

Family sponsorship in the UAE is a decision, not a form. Who you can put on the file, what you have to prove, and what it will cost you are three different questions. Mixing them up is how people spend a month on the wrong person.

This is the parent guide. It answers the eligibility question. The salary thresholds, the document list, and the spouse, children and parent service pages sit underneath it. Use this page to decide. Use those pages to file.

Who is allowed to sponsor family in the UAE?

You need a valid UAE residence visa of your own. That is the first filter, and it is binary.

The UAE Government portal is blunt about who may then bring family. Both employers and employees with a valid residence visa can sponsor. Job title no longer matters. That page was updated on 7 August 2026.

GDRFA Dubai says the same thing in different words: both male and female foreign residents may bring family members into the country. The portal uses "his/her" for a reason. A woman with her own residence can sponsor. A man can. The test is the residence, the income and the housing, not the gender on the Emirates ID.

Two other tracks change the picture, and only a little. Green visa holders may sponsor first-degree relatives. Golden visa holders may sponsor a spouse and children regardless of the children's age. Those are different products. If you are on an ordinary employment residence, do not borrow their rules.

A UAE citizen sponsors a foreign spouse, parent or child on a five-year residence. That is a citizen file. The rest of this guide is for the expat resident.

The first question is not salary. It is whether this person is even on the published list.

Who can I put on a family sponsorship file?

The published list is short. Expatriate residents may bring in a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25, and children with special needs. ICP, GDRFA Dubai and the government portal all use that wording.

Parents are not on that list. They are a different application, with a different salary figure, a cash guarantee and a rule that they travel as a pair. Treat them as a second file, not as an extra line on the first one.

Siblings, in-laws, adult sons out of study, and married daughters are not on the ordinary list. A visit visa is a different product.

Eligibility at a glance. Every cell is taken from a government page, not from market folklore.
WhoWho can sponsorIncome conditionHousing conditionWhat most often blocks it
SpouseA male or female resident with a valid UAE residence visa. If the wife is the sponsor, GDRFA asks for no objection from the father.AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. Partners: share of at least AED 48,000 in the partnership agreement.Live with the sponsor. GDRFA wants an attested tenancy and the latest electricity and water bill.A marriage certificate whose names do not match the passports.
Son under 18The same resident sponsor. Either parent may file if they hold the residence. The same published salary test as for a spouse. The same. The child lives where the guarantor lives. An unattested foreign birth certificate, or a name that does not match the child's passport.
Son 18–25 in studyThe same resident sponsor. Current official pages do not require proof of study in this age band. Study evidence is published for sons over 25. Medical fitness is required from 18.The same published salary test. The same housing test.Filing him after he turns 25 without a university letter, or skipping the medical because he is "still a student".
Unmarried daughterThe same resident sponsor. No published age limit while she remains unmarried. Medical fitness from 18.The same published salary test. The same housing test.A marriage that has not been declared, or a certificate that still lists her as married.
ParentsNot on the standard family list. ICP accepts proof of kinship for parents. GDRFA publishes the parent rules on its humanitarian card. Green visa holders may sponsor first-degree relatives.Only published figure: AED 10,000 on GDRFA's humanitarian card. Guarantee of AED 5,000 per request; ICP caps the total at AED 15,000.Same housing, and they live with the sponsor.Filing one parent alone, or missing the consulate affidavit.

Read the table left to right for the person you actually want to bring. The rest of this page is the why behind each row.

Can I sponsor my wife or husband?

Yes, if you hold the residence and you clear the income and housing tests. The relationship document is a certified marriage contract. That is the whole eligibility question for a spouse.

The part people miss is the other direction. A wife who holds the residence can sponsor her husband. The portal is gender-neutral. GDRFA adds one condition: no objection from the father if the guarantor is the wife. Get that letter before you submit. The counter will ask for it even if he is sitting next to her. We have watched that file stall for a week because nobody thought to obtain a no-objection from a man who was in the same room.

How the wife visa in Dubai is actually filed, from entry permit to stamping, is a service page. This page only decides whether you are allowed to open it.

Until what age can I sponsor my children?

Sons: under 25. Daughters: no age limit while unmarried. Children with special needs: any age, with documents that prove the condition.

That is Cabinet Resolution 65 of 2022, restated on the government portal, on ICP's service card and on GDRFA's residence-permit page. The old 18-year cap for sons is gone.

Two extra filters sit on top. Anyone who has completed 18 must pass a medical fitness test at an approved UAE health centre. And they live where you live, for the duration of the permit.

A married daughter is not a child on this file. An adult son who has turned 25 is not a child on this file, unless he still qualifies on the student rule below. The children visa page is the filing route once the age and status tests are clear.

Does a son aged 18 to 25 still need to be in study?

No. Not on the current official pages.

This is the point most blogs still get wrong, because they are copying the pre-2022 rule. Under that older practice, a son past 18 needed a university letter to stay. Cabinet Resolution 65 raised the age to 25. The government portal, ICP and GDRFA now say "sons under 25" with no study condition attached to that band.

Study comes back after 25. The portal's student-visa page, updated 28 July 2026, states that male students over 25 can stay on their parents' sponsorship if they provide evidence of attending a higher educational institute. That is a different sentence, about a different age.

So: 18 to 25, file him as a son. Over 25 and in higher education, file him with the university letter. Over 25 and not in study, he needs his own residence. Do not send a university letter for a 22-year-old because a forum said you must. Do not skip one for a 26-year-old because a forum said the age is now 25 for everyone.

The mistake we see most: A son who turned 25 last month, filed as a child because the family still thinks of him as one. GDRFA does not. The Amer counter asks for the date of birth on the passport. It does not ask how old he feels. If he is 25 years and one day, the child category is closed unless the university letter is in the folder.

Can I sponsor my parents?

Yes, but not on the same terms as a spouse or a child. Parents are the one category where the published record and the stories you will hear at school gates have drifted apart.

ICP's residence-permit card lists "proof of kinship when sponsoring parents" as a required document, so the federal authority accepts the relationship. GDRFA Dubai publishes the working rules on its humanitarian cases card, not on the ordinary family card. That placement is the clue.

What that humanitarian card actually publishes, and we have checked it:

  • Minimum salary of AED 10,000. That is the only official parent-sponsorship salary figure we can point at.
  • A financial guarantee of AED 5,000 per request. ICP states the same amount per individual for humanitarian cases and caps the total at AED 15,000.
  • Parents sponsored together, unless there has been a death or divorce.
  • An affidavit letter from the sponsor's consulate.

The widely quoted AED 20,000 salary is not on any government page we reached. Do not budget around a number nobody can source, and do not assume AED 10,000 is enough for every case because it sits on a humanitarian card. Ask GDRFA or an Amer centre what applies to your file, in writing. The parents visa page is the filing route.

Green visa holders have a cleaner path: first-degree relatives, including parents, on the same validity as their own permit. The trade-off is you have to qualify for the Green visa first.

What do I have to prove besides the relationship?

Three things, once the relationship is accepted: income, housing, and insurance. The document-by-document list lives on the family visa documents guide. What follows is only what those three tests mean for the decision.

Income, in two sentences. To sponsor a spouse and children the published test is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation; a business partner is tested on a share of at least AED 48,000. Full breakdown, including what is and is not published for parents, is on the salary requirements page.

Housing is simpler than the internet makes it. GDRFA wants an attested tenancy contract and the latest electricity and water bill. The family lives where the guarantor lives. No official page we reached publishes a bedroom count. The two-bedroom "rule" is market practice. Treat it as a conversation you may have, not as a statute you have failed.

Insurance is not optional. Dubai Law No. 11 of 2013, Article 11, requires a sponsor to enrol the people they sponsor, to bear the cost, and to produce a policy when the residence is issued or renewed. ICP lists valid health insurance on the family document list. There is no single official premium. Anyone who quotes you one number for "family insurance" is selling a policy, not reading a law.

Published GDRFA fees are the small number. Insurance and attestation are the ones that move.

What does family sponsorship actually cost?

The published government fees are the part you can add up. Everything around them depends on the case.

GDRFA Dubai summarises the family entry permit as AED 1,035 if the sponsored person is already inside the country and AED 365 if they are outside. The residence permit itself is AED 200, plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham, AED 500 in-country fee and AED 20 delivery. GDRFA states a 48-hour completion time for that residence permit.

Those are per person. They do not include insurance, medical fitness for anyone 18 or over, or attestation of foreign certificates. Those last three have no single published price, because they depend on age, the insurer and the country that issued the paper.

A worked example, using only the figures GDRFA publishes. A Dubai employee sponsors a wife and two children aged 9 and 16, all three currently outside the UAE.

Entry permits: 3 x AED 365 = AED 1,095.

Once they enter, each residence permit is AED 200 + 10 + 10 + 500 + 20 = AED 740. Three people: AED 2,220.

Published GDRFA total for the three of them: AED 3,315.

The wife needs a medical fitness test. The children, under 18, do not. Insurance for three dependants will usually dwarf the GDRFA lines. Attestation of the foreign certificates is the long pole, because of the weeks in the home country, not because of the MOFAIC fee.

Same family, already inside on visit visas: the entry side jumps to 3 x AED 1,035 = AED 3,105. Add the same AED 2,220 of residence fees and the published GDRFA total becomes AED 5,325. Comfort has a published price: AED 670 more per person on the entry permit.

Add a parent pair and you add two more permits, a guarantee of AED 5,000 per request, and insurance priced for older lives. That is a second application. Do not add it to the spouse-and-children file in your head.

What happens to my family if I lose my visa?

Their residence is tied to yours. If yours is cancelled, theirs is cancelled. The government portal states this without decoration.

What you then get is a six-month grace period from the date of expiry or cancellation, to obtain a new residence permit. That window is real. It runs whether or not anyone is thinking about it.

If you fail to renew or cancel the dependants' visas, you can be fined. ICP's published overstay schedule is AED 50 per day. Do not let a cancelled employment visa sit while the family file quietly accumulates a daily charge.

GDRFA's family entry permit gives the sponsored person 60 days from the date of entry to finish the residency requirements. Plan the medical and the biometrics before they land, not after.

Who should I sponsor first if I cannot do everyone at once?

Spouse and children first. Parents second. That is our position, and it has a cost: your parents wait.

The reason is the calendar, not sentiment. A son turning 25 is a hard stop. An unmarried daughter is not, but a marriage will be. A parent pair has no published age cliff of that kind. The file that can close on you is the one you should open first.

The other reason is the published rules. Spouse and children sit on pages that three authorities repeat in the same words. Parents sit on a humanitarian card. One of those files you can predict. The other you confirm in writing before you spend the money.

If you already clear AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with documented housing, do not wait for a "better" salary so you can combine everyone into one application. Certificates age. Children age. The tenancy you have today is the one you can prove today.

  1. Confirm you are a valid resident sponsorYour own residence has to be live. An expired personal visa does not sponsor anyone. Green and Golden holders should check the wider family rules that come with those products before using the ordinary list.
  2. Write down each person and the rule that lets them onSpouse, son under 25, unmarried daughter, child with special needs, or parent on the separate track. If a name does not fit a row, it is a visit question, not a sponsorship question.
  3. Check the salary branch in one sittingAED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with documented accommodation, or a partner share of AED 48,000. Detail lives on the salary requirements page. Do not re-litigate the number here.
  4. Confirm the housing is in your nameAttested tenancy, latest DEWA bill, address that matches. A contract in a spouse's or employer's name is a question, not a refusal, but it is a question you do not want on submission day.
  5. Decide inside or outside before you buy ticketsAED 365 per person if they apply from abroad, AED 1,035 if they are already here. Comfort has a published price.
  6. Start the foreign certificates now, then file the first groupMarriage and birth certificates issued abroad are the long pole. Open the spouse and under-25 children file first. Parents are a second application, with the guarantee and the consulate affidavit gathered on their own clock.
MSM tip: If you can only open one file this quarter, open the children's file before the parents'. A son turning 25 will not wait for a consulate appointment. A parent pair will still be a parent pair in three months.

MSM runs these files every week from Deira: eligibility first, then attestation, then the GDRFA submission. Send us the residence page, the salary certificate and the list of people. We will tell you which file to open. Start at family visa services.
