Parents arrive for a month and stay for four.
It is the most common family visa arrangement in Dubai and it works, right up to the point where somebody miscounts a ceiling that is published, firm and easy to check.
Here is what the visit permit gives you, where the limit sits, and the two ways families cross it by accident.
What the visit visa actually gives you
A visit visa lets a relative come and stay. It does not make them resident, it does not entitle them to work, and it does not put them on your family file.
ICP's visa service covers several categories, of which the relevant one here is the visitor visa for relatives and friends, sponsored by a resident.
Two clocks apply and people merge them.
The entry permit must be used within its 60-day validity from the date of issue, and that validity may be extended for a similar period. That is the window to arrive.
The stay is 30, 60 or 90 days depending on the duration selected, and it starts on arrival.
So a permit issued in January and used in February gives its full stay from February. Families who think the clock started at issue cut their own visit short.
The income condition, by degree of kinship
ICP sets the sponsor's monthly income requirement by how closely related the visitor is, and it is worth knowing before you promise anybody anything.
| Who is visiting | Degree | Minimum monthly salary |
|---|---|---|
| Parents, spouse, children | First degree | AED 4,000 |
| Siblings, grandparents, grandchildren | Second degree | AED 8,000 |
| Uncles, aunts, cousins | Third degree | AED 8,000 |
| Friends | Not a relative | AED 15,000 |
| Sponsored by a property owner | Owner route | AED 10,000, or demonstrated financial solvency for the stay |
Proof of kinship is required according to the degree, which means documents rather than assertion. For a parent that is usually straightforward. For a cousin it is a chain of certificates establishing a shared grandparent, and that is a genuine piece of work.
The property-owner route is separate and useful. It requires accommodation suitable for habitation with an ownership certificate from the competent authority, and a monthly income of no less than AED 10,000 or demonstrated financial solvency for the duration of the stay.
The 120-day ceiling, and how the maths works
The extension rule is generous and it is bounded.
ICP states that the authority may extend the visa once or multiple times, provided the total period of stay in the UAE does not exceed 120 days.
So the ceiling is on the total, not on the number of extensions. That distinction matters.
| Starting stay | Extensions available | Maximum total |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days | Up to 90 further days | 120 days |
| 60 days | Up to 60 further days | 120 days |
| 90 days | Up to 30 further days | 120 days |
Which produces a small piece of practical advice. If you already know the visit will be long, select the longer initial duration. You reach the same 120 days either way, but with fewer transactions, fewer fees and fewer chances to miss a date.
Note also that this is a stay ceiling rather than an annual quota. How soon a visitor may return afterwards is a separate question, and one to ask ICP directly rather than infer.
What it costs, including the guarantee
ICP publishes these, so you can check any quote against them.
Application fee, AED 100. Visit visa issuance for a single entry, AED 100. For multiple entry, AED 200.
Then the financial guarantee: AED 1,000 for a single-entry visa, AED 2,000 for multiple entry. It may be refunded by submitting a request for refund after the visa.
The guarantee is the line families do not expect. It is a deposit rather than a fee, and it is refundable on request, but it has to be paid up front and it is several times the visa cost.
The conditions people trip over
Beyond income and kinship, three conditions from the service that catch people.
A valid health insurance policy within the UAE is required. Visitors assume travel insurance from home is enough. Check the requirement before travel rather than at a counter.
A passport valid for no less than six months. An elderly parent's passport with five months left is the most common single blocker on these applications, and it takes weeks to fix from another country.
The host or head of family must have an active sponsor file that enables them to apply for visa and residence services. If you have never sponsored anyone, that file may not exist yet, and opening it requires an attested Ejari lease or Dubai Land Department ownership. That is on Ejari and the housing requirement.
A medical report is also listed among required documents for certain categories. Ask which applies to your visitor's nationality and category rather than assuming.
Converting to residence without leaving
The question behind most searches on this subject. Mother is here on a visit. Can she stay permanently without flying home first?
Sometimes, through a status change, which GDRFA Dubai calls Status Amendment. Its published conditions are having a new visa, and cancellation of the previous residence permit. The fee is AED 500 plus knowledge, innovation and individual processing charges, with 48-hour completion.
So the sequence is: obtain the residence entry permit while she is here, close the visit status, then amend. The full mechanics, including when it is not available and when a flight is genuinely required, are on status change versus exit and re-entry.
What you should not do is assume it will work and let the visit run to its ceiling first. Start the residence application with real time left on the visit, because a status change needs a live status to change from.
Whether you can sponsor a parent for residence at all is a separate and harder question, with its own income and insurance conditions, and it is on sponsoring your parents in Dubai.
The overstay trap
Two ways families cross the line, and neither involves anybody deciding to break a rule.
Counting from the wrong date. The stay runs from arrival. The entry permit's 60-day validity is a different clock. Mixing them up produces a confident miscalculation, usually in the family's favour, usually by several weeks.
Assuming a residence application pauses the visit clock. It does not. A pending entry permit is not a status. If the visit stay expires while a residence application is in progress, the visitor is overstaying regardless of what is pending.
The current fine position is a flat rate rather than the escalating scale people remember, and it is set out in UAE visa overstay fines. Read that before assuming a few days will not matter.
A worked example: parents visiting for the winter
A common arrangement, with the numbers made specific.
A resident on AED 9,500 wants both parents to visit from November to March. That is roughly 150 days, and the ceiling is 120.
| Element | Position |
|---|---|
| Relationship | Parents. First degree |
| Income condition | AED 4,000. Comfortably met at AED 9,500 |
| Intended stay | ~150 days |
| Published ceiling | 120 days total, including all extensions |
| Shortfall | About 30 days |
| Fees, two visitors, single entry | AED 100 application plus AED 100 visa each, so AED 400 |
| Financial guarantee, two visitors | AED 2,000, refundable by request |
Three honest options, and we walked through all of them.
Shorten the visit to fit inside 120 days, which is the simple answer and the one most families take once they see it written down.
Split the trip, with a departure and a fresh application afterwards, subject to what ICP says about returning.
Or, if the parents were going to stay anyway, look at residence properly rather than stretching a visit. Sponsoring parents has its own conditions and is a genuinely different undertaking, but for families who keep repeating four-month visits it is the honest conversation to have.
They shortened the trip by three weeks. It took ten minutes to decide once the ceiling was on the table, and it would have been a fine and a difficult airport conversation if nobody had checked.
Planning a long visit properly
Five steps, and they take an hour.
- Establish the degree of kinship firstIt sets the income condition and the proof you will need. First degree is parents, spouse and children at AED 4,000. Second and third degree are AED 8,000. Friends are AED 15,000.
- Check the passport has more than six monthsOn the day of travel, not today. This is the most common blocker and the slowest to fix from abroad.
- Confirm your sponsor file is activeThe service requires the host to have an active sponsor file. If you have never sponsored anybody, that file may not exist yet, and opening it needs an attested Ejari or property ownership.
- Count 120 days from the intended arrival date and write down the end dateThen mark a reminder two weeks before it. Extensions are filed before expiry, not after, and a weekend can eat the margin.
- Sort the UAE health insurance before travelA valid policy within the UAE is required. Travel insurance from home is not automatically the same thing.
And put the guarantee refund in the calendar for the week after they fly home.
