Yes.
That is the answer, and it deserves to be the first word on the page, because the question is usually asked by someone who has been told otherwise by a colleague.
A woman holding a UAE residence visa can sponsor her husband onto a family file. What is genuinely unsettled is the income test that will be applied to her, and that is worth eight hundred words rather than a confident number.
The general rules of who may sponsor whom are in the family sponsorship guide. This page is the female-sponsor version.
The short answer
She files the same family entry permit application a male sponsor files. Same authority, same service, same 48-hour published completion, same certified marriage contract.
The husband becomes a sponsored family member. He can then work, if he obtains his own work permit, in the same way a sponsored wife can. Being on a spouse's residence does not by itself grant the right to work, in either direction, and that symmetry surprises people.
What differs is not the mechanism. It is the threshold, and possibly a discretionary approval sitting on top of it.
What GDRFA actually publishes today
Let us stay with documents that resolve when you click them.
GDRFA Dubai's family residence entry permit card sets the sponsor's salary condition at a minimum of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus housing. It states that for the resident. It does not attach a different figure to a female resident on that card.
The same card lists the documents: personal photograph, passport valid for at least six months, employment contract, salary certificate for government, semi-government and free zone employees, an attested birth certificate where children are involved, a certified marriage contract, and paternal consent if the sponsor is the wife.
That last item is the only gendered line on the live card. It is worth reading twice, because it is about children rather than about the husband.
| Condition | What the live GDRFA card says | Applies differently to a female sponsor? |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus housing, for the resident | Not on the card. See the section below |
| Passport validity | At least six months | No |
| Marriage contract | Must be certified | No |
| Birth certificate | Attested, where children are on the file | No |
| Paternal consent | Required if the sponsor is the wife | Yes. This is the one explicit difference |
| Completion time | 48 hours | No |
The AED 10,000 rule, and why we are hedging on it
Search this question and you will get the same paragraph on forty sites.
It says a woman may sponsor her husband and children if her residence permit shows she is an engineer, teacher, doctor, nurse or another profession in the medical sector, with a monthly salary of not less than AED 10,000, or AED 8,000 plus accommodation. And that in Dubai, a woman outside those categories may still be approved above AED 10,000 a month with special permission from the residency department.
That text was published on the UAE Government portal. We are not disputing that it existed. We checked, while writing this in August 2026, and the page it lived on returns a 404. The current family sponsorship page on the same portal does not carry the condition. ICP's visa service page, which is live and sets out sponsor income thresholds in some detail, states no restriction specific to female sponsors.
So what is the truth?
We do not know, and neither does any site republishing that paragraph without checking whether its source still resolves. Three possibilities are all live: the rule was withdrawn, the rule moved to a page we have not located, or the rule persists in practice at the counter without a current published page behind it.
How to get a real answer in a week
Do not resolve this by reading. Resolve it by asking, and get it in writing.
- Ask GDRFA directly, in a channel that produces a recordThe GDRFA call centre or an Amer service centre. Ask the specific question: what monthly income will be applied to a female sponsor, in my profession, sponsoring a husband. Not "can a woman sponsor her husband", which gets you a yes and no number.
- Put your profession in the questionThe old rule turned on the profession printed on the residence permit. Whether or not it survives, the counter will answer differently for a nurse and for an accountant, so ask about the title that actually appears on your permit.
- Ask what happens if you are below itIf the answer is a discretionary approval rather than a hard bar, that is a different plan with a different timeline. Find out whether the door is closed or narrow.
- Get it in writing before you spendA reference number, an email, a printed note. Attestation chains and recruitment decisions get made off the back of this answer, and none of them are cheap to reverse.
A week of asking beats six weeks of assuming. This is the rare case where the phone call genuinely is the fastest instrument available.
The documents, which are the same as any family file
Everything else is an ordinary family file, and there is some comfort in that.
The certified marriage contract is the long item, exactly as it is for a male sponsor. If the marriage happened abroad and the certificate has never been attested, that chain runs through the issuing country, the UAE embassy there, and then MOFAIC here, plus a legal translation if it is not in Arabic. Four to six weeks, and it is entirely predictable, which means it is the thing to start today.
Name consistency matters as much as ever. Passport spelling wins. Every other document matches it.
The full list of what returns a family file, and in what order to fix it, is on why family visa applications get rejected.
Paternal consent: the condition that genuinely is different
The one genuinely current, genuinely gendered condition.
Where the sponsor is the wife, GDRFA requires paternal consent. That is about the children on the file, not about the husband, and it catches families in an obvious situation and a less obvious one.
The obvious one: the father is abroad, or the parents are separated, and a consent or a custody ruling has to be produced and attested.
The less obvious one: the father is standing right there in Dubai, married to the sponsor, entirely cooperative, and still has to sign. Families assume that an intact marriage makes the requirement moot. It does not. It is a document on a list.
Where the parents are separated, the custody ruling substitutes for consent, and that is its own subject: divorce and the documents that decide custody and visas. Stepchildren are different again, and are covered in stepchild and adopted child sponsorship.
What changes at the residence stage
Once the entry permit is approved, the file behaves like any other.
The husband sits the medical fitness test, because he has completed 18. Health insurance has to be in place before residence completes, and in Dubai that is a hard blocker rather than a formality. Then the Emirates ID.
None of that is different for a female sponsor. The details are on the dependant medical test and dependant health insurance.
A worked example: an engineer sponsoring her husband
A file from earlier this year, details changed.
Sponsor: a civil engineer on a Dubai residence permit, AED 13,500 a month, profession printed on the permit as engineer. Husband arriving from abroad. One child, aged seven, arriving with him.
She was comfortably above every figure in play, which is why we tell this one. Her file was clean on income under any reading of the rule, and it still took eleven weeks.
| Item | Days | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate attestation | 34 | Issued abroad, never attested. Ran through two countries |
| Paternal consent for the child | 19 | Ran in parallel with the above. The father signed in Dubai, but the document still had to be produced and certified properly |
| Entry permit | 2 | GDRFA's published 48 hours, met exactly |
| Medical, insurance, Emirates ID | 12 | Insurance was the slow part, not the medical |
| Total | ~11 weeks | Of which 2 days were immigration |
Note what did not go wrong. Nobody questioned whether a woman could sponsor her husband. The counter did not blink at it.
The eleven weeks were an unattested marriage certificate and a consent form, which are exactly the same two items that slow down a male sponsor's file. Being the female sponsor was not the hard part of this application. Not having started the attestation a year earlier was.
The three mistakes we see on female-sponsor files
Waiting for certainty on the income rule before starting anything. The marriage certificate attestation does not depend on the answer. Neither does the paternal consent. Start both while you are asking GDRFA about income, because if the answer is good you have saved six weeks, and if it is bad you have lost nothing that was not already needed.
Assuming the husband can work on arrival. He cannot, not on the residence alone. He needs his own work permit, exactly as a sponsored wife does. Couples plan finances around a salary that is a permit away.
Skipping paternal consent because the father is present and agreeable. The requirement is on the list regardless of how harmonious the household is. It is a two-day item if you know about it and a two-week item if you discover it at the counter.
MSM runs female-sponsor family files from Deira every month. If you want the income question answered before you spend anything, we will ask it with you. Start at family visa services.
