Family sponsorship in Dubai is one of those topics where the internet is confidently wrong about the most important number. So let us be precise about which figures are published, which are not, and where they come from.

The salary test for spouse and children

The test is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

That figure is stated on the UAE Government portal, on ICP's service card and on GDRFA Dubai's. Three official sources, one number. It is about as settled as UAE requirements get.

The "plus accommodation" branch matters more than people notice. If your employer provides housing, the cash salary requirement drops by a quarter, and the accommodation is evidenced through the employment contract or a letter rather than a payslip.

If you are a business partner rather than an employee, the test is different. GDRFA Dubai states the partner's share must be at least AED 48,000.

The housing test is about suitable accommodation with a registered tenancy, not a published bedroom count.

Who counts as a child

The government portal defines the sponsorable family as spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 years old, and children with special needs.

Two details worth pulling out. Unmarried daughters have no age limit. Children with disabilities are eligible regardless of age. Both are confirmed in the 2022 executive regulation summary and restated on the current portal page.

Dependants aged 18 and over must undergo and pass a medical fitness test at approved health centres in the UAE.

One rule that catches families out at the wrong moment: when the sponsor's permit expires or is cancelled, dependants get a six-month grace period. That is a real window, but it is not indefinite, and it runs whether or not anyone is thinking about it.

The housing test

GDRFA Dubai requires an attested tenancy contract plus the latest electricity and water bill.

What it does not publish is a minimum bedroom count. You will see "two-bedroom minimum" quoted widely. We could not find it on any official page reached. Treat it as market practice rather than a published rule, and expect the assessment to be about suitability rather than a hard room count.

The tenancy must be registered. In Dubai that means Ejari. Detail in Ejari and the office requirement, which covers company premises but the registration system is the same.

Sponsoring parents: what is actually published

This is where we part company with almost every other guide on the internet.

The AED 20,000 salary requirement for sponsoring parents could not be verified on any official UAE source. It is universally repeated, usually attributed to "DNRD" or "Amer", and we found no government page stating it.

What is published, on GDRFA Dubai's residence permit for humanitarian cases card, is a minimum salary of AED 10,000. That is the only verified parent-sponsorship salary figure we could locate.

What else GDRFA publishes about parents, and these are verified:

  • Financial guarantee of AED 5,000 per request, provided the total guarantee does not exceed AED 15,000
  • Parents must be sponsored together, unless there has been a death or divorce
  • An affidavit letter from the sponsor's consulate is required

On duration, secondary sources say parent visas are granted yearly regardless of the sponsor's visa length. That is consistent with practice but not something we could confirm on a government page. Medical insurance for parents, renewed annually, is similarly reported rather than published.

How to use this: Do not budget your parents' sponsorship around AED 20,000 because a blog told you to, and do not assume AED 10,000 is enough because we found it on a humanitarian card. Ask GDRFA or an Amer centre what applies to your case, in writing. This is precisely the sort of question where the published record and the counter practice have drifted apart.

What a woman sponsoring family needs

The government portal is gender-neutral: expatriate residents may bring in "his/her" spouse and children.

GDRFA Dubai adds one condition worth knowing in advance: no objection from the father if the guarantor is the wife. That is a document to obtain before submitting, not a surprise at the counter.

Note that GDRFA's residence permit page states conditions on kinship, suitable housing and children's ages, but sets out no salary or tenancy-value threshold. If someone cites that page as the source for a salary figure, they have not read it.

Where borderline files fail

Five patterns, from files we have seen bounce.

Salary certificate and payslips disagree. An allowance included in one and not the other is enough to cause a query. Get the certificate issued to match the bank credits.

Accommodation claimed but not evidenced. If you are relying on the AED 3,000 plus accommodation branch, the accommodation has to be documented in the employment contract or an employer letter. A verbal arrangement is not evidence.

Tenancy in the wrong name. The Ejari should be in the sponsor's name. A contract in a spouse's or employer's name creates a question that has to be answered.

Unattested certificates. A marriage or birth certificate issued abroad needs the full attestation chain: home-country authority, home foreign ministry, UAE embassy in that country, then MOFAIC here. This is the single longest lead time in a family file and the one most often started too late. See marriage certificate attestation and birth certificate attestation.

Sponsoring one parent. GDRFA requires both, unless there has been a death or divorce. A file for one parent alone is refused on its face.

Newborns, and the deadline nobody can source

The 120-day deadline to register a newborn is quoted everywhere, usually attributed to Article 71 of Cabinet Resolution 65 of 2022. We could not reproduce it: the legislation portal blocks automated retrieval, and it is not stated on any u.ae, ICP or GDRFA page we reached.

What we can verify is the fine, and the commonly quoted figure is wrong. ICP's own published fine schedule lists newborn registration alongside entry visas, residence permits and exit permits at AED 50 per day. The AED 100 per day figure circulating online contradicts ICP's own schedule.

So: register promptly, because a daily fine runs either way, but do not let anyone frighten you with a doubled rate that the authority does not publish.

A checklist before you apply

  1. Confirm which salary branch you are usingAED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with documented accommodation. Get the salary certificate issued to match.
  2. Check the Ejari is current and in your namePlus the latest DEWA bill. Both are on GDRFA's document list.
  3. Start attestation on foreign certificates nowMarriage and birth certificates issued abroad need the full chain and it is the longest step. Everything else can wait; this cannot.
  4. Book medicals for anyone 18 or overDependants aged 18 and above must pass a medical fitness test at an approved centre. Dubai Health publishes the regular test at AED 250.
  5. For parents, gather the extrasThe consulate affidavit, the AED 5,000 per request guarantee, and both parents on the same file.
  6. If your spouse is sponsoring, get the father's no-objectionGDRFA states this condition explicitly. Obtain it before submitting.
MSM tip: Order the attestation before you order anything else. Nine times out of ten the family file is ready and waiting on one certificate that has been sitting in an embassy queue for three weeks.

Our family visa documents guide covers the full paperwork list, and family visa services covers how we file it. MSM handles the sponsorship application and the attestation chain together, which is usually the difference between a four-week file and a ten-week one.
