The Amer counter opens the passport to the date of birth. It does not ask how old he feels.
If that date is 18 years and one day, the child exemption from the medical is gone. If it is 25 years and one day, the child category is gone unless a university letter is in the folder. Those are two different birthdays. Most families treat them as one.

Does his visa end the day he turns 18?
No. Nothing on the official pages cancels a live dependant permit on the morning of his 18th birthday.
The government portal, ICP and GDRFA Dubai's family card all define the sponsorable son as under 25. GDRFA's family entry-permit terms say the same thing in different words: "Up to 25 years old, a resident may sponsor his male children."
The medical attaches to issuance and to renewal, not to the birthday. GDRFA's family residence card and its family renewal card both ask for "a decent medical examination approved by the concerned authorities if they are over (18) years old." If his current permit still has months left, those months still count.
What the pages do not publish is a mid-permit medical on the birthday itself. We have never been asked to cancel a live child visa the week he turns 18. The first time the system demands the adult paperwork is the next time you open the file.
That is the part the WhatsApp groups get backwards. They treat 18 as a visa cliff. The published cliff for a son is 25.
What actually changes at 18?
One new requirement. A fitness test.
The government portal is blunt: male and female family members who have completed 18 must undergo and pass a medical fitness test at an approved UAE health centre. The same line sits in the general residence provisions. Clearing the medical "applies to all those who have completed the age of 18."
In Dubai that is a blood collection and a chest X-ray. DHA's published regular service is AED 250 and 24 working hours. The longer occupational panel (syphilis, hepatitis B, pregnancy) is for specific jobs, not for a dependant son. Detail in the Dubai medical fitness test.
Book it against the next issuance or the next renewal. Official pages do not tell you to pull a valid permit mid-term the week he turns 18. They are silent on a mid-permit medical. We treat that silence as "wait for the renewal", and we would rather a client confirm at Amer than invent a birthday appointment.
At that first post-18 renewal the counter is not interested in a school letter. It wants the fitness report, the passport, and the same sponsor papers you used last time. The file we see bounced most often at this age is the one that arrives with last year's child checklist and no medical number.
When do Emirates ID fingerprints start?
Fifteen. Not eighteen.
ICP's identity-card rules require a signature and fingerprint for anyone who has completed 15, including on renewal. The government portal's general residence page adds that applicants 18 and above must also apply for an Emirates ID. Those are two different thresholds, and they get mashed into one sentence online.
If he already enrolled at 15, including through ICP's Basmah 15 school programme, the 18th birthday is not a new biometric event. He still attends at the next ID renewal, because ICP repeats fingerprint and signature from 15 up. He does not start biometrics at 18. That work, if it was done, is already behind you.
Children under 15 do not attend for fingerprints at all. A household that still thinks "18 is when he has to go in" often books a slot for a younger sibling who does not need one, and then skips the 16-year-old who does. Count from 15. The map is in biometrics for UAE residency.
Walk into an Amer centre for a fingerprint and you will waste a morning. Amer serves GDRFA. Fingerprints are ICP.
Until what age can a son stay on a parent's visa?
Until 25, on the current official pages.
Three authorities, one phrase. The portal: sons under 25. ICP: sons under 25. GDRFA: children under 25, and separately, male children up to 25. Children with special needs sit outside the age cap, with documents that prove the condition.
What the pages do not say is whether "under 25" is read on the birthday or at the next renewal after it. We treat the birthday as the hard stop, because the counter reads the passport. If he turns 25 while a file is still sitting on a consulate desk, he is no longer a child on that file.

Does a son aged 18 to 25 still need to be in study?
No. Not on the current official pages.
This is the leftover rule. Before the age moved to 25, a son past 18 often needed a university letter to stay. Blogs still copy that sentence. The portal, ICP and GDRFA now say "sons under 25" with no study condition sitting on that band.
Study comes back after 25. Sending a school or university letter for a 20-year-old because a forum said you must is wasted paper. Skipping one for a 26-year-old because a forum said "the age is now 25 for everyone" is how the file dies.
Do not dress a 22-year-old's file up as a student file. File him as a son.
What proof is published for a son over 25?
One published sentence, and it is not on the ordinary family card.
The government student-visa page, updated 28 July 2026, states that expatriate residents can sponsor a male child up to 25, and therefore "male students over the age of 25 can stay on their parents' sponsorship if they provide evidence of attending a higher educational institute." The same page says a student-visa application needs a certificate from the university or institute specifying the duration of study.
GDRFA publishes a second, narrower list on its humanitarian-cases card, not on the ordinary family card. For "Sponsoring Children Aged 25 Years and Above" it asks for a certified proof of continuation of studies, inside or outside the UAE, or a certified university graduation certificate. A certificate issued abroad must be attested by the UAE embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dubai. That track is reviewed by a committee, case by case, with a published completion time of 14 days. It is not the 48-hour family residence service.
Two pages, two weights. The student-visa page is the ordinary published exception: he is still studying, so he can stay on the parent. The humanitarian card is a committee door. Do not walk a straightforward university student through the Festival Centre humanitarian desk because a typing centre likes that form.
What if he is over 25 and not studying?
There is no ordinary-family route on the pages we reached.
The family cards stop at 25. The student-visa exception needs evidence that he is attending a higher educational institute. If he is not, he needs his own residence: employment, a university as sponsor, or another product that actually names him. Living at home is not a category.
Our position: if he is 24 and not going into higher education, start that other residence now. The trade-off is an extra file this year. The alternative is a 25-year-old on an expired dependant permit, and a family hoping a humanitarian committee will treat "he just graduated" as a plan.
GDRFA's humanitarian card does list a graduation certificate as one possible document for children aged 25 and above. That is a committee application, not a promise. All requests on that card are reviewed case by case. Do not budget a working household around a door that says "subject to evaluation".
If a permit then expires, GDRFA's family residence card states a 60-day grace after expiry or cancellation. ICP's overstay schedule is AED 50 a day. Do not let a birthday argument turn into a daily fine.
What does the first renewal after 18 actually cost?
A worked file, using only published lines.
A son turns 18 on 4 March. His current dependant residence expires on 12 June. Nothing is required on 4 March. At the June renewal he is over 18, so the medical is now on the list.
GDRFA's family renewal lines: residence AED 200, Knowledge Dirham AED 10, Innovation Dirham AED 10, in-country fee AED 500, delivery AED 20. That is AED 740. If the new permit is longer than two years, GDRFA adds AED 100 for each extra year, so a three-year stamp is AED 840.
Medical, DHA regular: AED 250, 24 working hours. DHA's catalogue says those fees do not include typing.
Published cash for that renewal: AED 990 on a two-year stamp, or AED 1,090 on a three-year stamp, plus Emirates ID renewal, which is a separate ICP fee. We are not inventing a resident ID figure here. Insurance is already a condition of his residence and is not a new 18-year charge.
Compare that with moving him onto a student or employment visa at 18 because a group chat said you must. You would pay a new entry permit, a new residence, another medical, and lose the simplicity of the parent's file. For a 19-year-old who is still a son on the published list, that is a more expensive answer to the wrong birthday.
Pay for regular unless the 60-day window after entry is already half gone. Express and Smart Salem exist, and they cost AED 700 on DHA's catalogue. A dependant renewal is rarely that tight if you start a few weeks before expiry, not the week the permit dies.
What should we do before the next renewal?
- Read the date of birth against the permit expiryIf he turns 18 before the next renewal, the medical joins the file then. If he turns 25 before the next renewal, the child category may already be closed. Those are different conversations.
- Do not pull a valid permit on the birthdayOfficial pages attach the medical to issuance and renewal. They do not tell you to cancel a live visa the week he turns 18.
- Book the medical against the renewal, not against the cakeDHA regular is 24 working hours. Book it a few days before you sit at Amer, not the morning of. Al Muhaisnah is the 24-hour centre if the diary is tight.
- Take him to ICP for fingerprints only if he is 15-plus and not yet enrolledIf Basmah 15 or an earlier renewal already captured him, the 18th birthday adds nothing on that side. Confirm the existing Emirates ID rather than booking a second capture.
- If he is 24 and not staying in higher education, open the other file nowEmployment or a university as sponsor. Waiting until 25 years and one day is how a working household becomes a humanitarian enquiry.
- If he is already over 25 and still studying, get the university letter firstDuration of study, on institute letterhead. That is the document the student-visa page names. Everything else can wait behind it.
How is a daughter treated differently?
The age cliff is a son rule.
Unmarried daughters have no published age limit. The portal, ICP and GDRFA all keep that wording. The student-visa page adds that a resident may continue to sponsor a female child for study, regardless of age, until she is married. A marriage takes her off this file. An 18th birthday does not.
She still does the medical from 18. She still does fingerprints from 15. Those two tests are not gendered. The eligibility cap is.
