Children Visa in Dubai

Newborns have a deadline attached that nobody mentions at the hospital. A baby born here needs a birth certificate, a passport and a residence visa, and the clock starts on day one.

How do you sponsor a child for a Dubai residence visa?

A resident parent applies for the child entry permit or, for a baby born here, for residence directly. The birth certificate is the central document and must be attested where it was issued abroad. Emirates ID registration follows, and medical fitness testing applies above a certain age.

What has to happen after a baby is born here?

Three things in order, and there is a time limit. The birth certificate is obtained first, then the child passport from their own country consulate or embassy, then the residence visa application.

Parents caught up in a new baby routinely lose track of this, and fines for late registration are avoidable but real.

  • Birth certificate obtained from the issuing authority
  • Passport from the child country mission in the UAE
  • Residence visa applied for within the permitted period
  • Emirates ID registration alongside the visa

What about children born abroad?

The birth certificate has to complete its own country chain before it is usable here: issuing authority, that country foreign ministry, the UAE mission there, then UAE MOFA on arrival. A legal translation follows where the certificate is not in Arabic or English.

As with a marriage certificate, this is the step that sets the timeline, because it happens somewhere else.

  • Full attestation chain in the country of birth
  • UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation on arrival
  • Legal translation where the language requires it
  • Both parents named consistently across documents

Are there age limits on sponsoring children?

Yes, and they differ. Sons can be sponsored as dependants up to a defined age, after which they need their own basis to stay, typically a student or employment route. Daughters are treated differently under the rules.

Families with a son approaching that threshold should plan the transition rather than discovering it at renewal.

  • An age limit applies to sponsoring sons as dependants
  • Daughters are treated differently under the rules
  • Students may continue on a different basis
  • Plan the transition before the limit is reached

What does the process involve in country?

Emirates ID registration for every child, medical fitness testing above the relevant age, and stamping of the residence visa. Younger children are generally exempt from the medical.

Health insurance is a condition of residence and applies to children as it does to adults.

  • Emirates ID registration for each child
  • Medical fitness test above the applicable age
  • Health insurance in place before stamping
  • Residence visa issued and linked to the sponsor

How we run a child sponsorship

  1. We check the birth certificateWhere it was issued and what stamps it carries. For overseas certificates this drives the whole timeline.
  2. Newborn sequencingFor babies born here, we work backwards from the registration deadline.
  3. Attestation and translationArranged or advised on, in the correct order.
  4. ApplicationEntry permit or direct residence, depending on the situation.
  5. Emirates ID and medicalBooked and attended, with the medical only where the age requires it.
  6. Stamping and handoverVisa stamped, with renewal dates supplied in writing.

What applies to your child?

Young child born abroadFull origin chain requiredGenerally exempt
Older child born abroadFull origin chain requiredApplies above the age threshold
Son approaching the age limitAlready heldApplies; plan the transition
The mistake we see most: Leaving a newborn residence application until the parents have recovered from the first month. There is a defined period for registering the child, and late registration attracts fines that grow. Start the birth certificate in week one, even if nothing else gets done.
MSM tip: Get two or three extra attested copies of a birth certificate while the chain is running. Schools, banks and later visa renewals all ask for it, and repeating the attestation later costs far more than extra copies now.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Birth certificate for each child, attested where issued abroad
Child passport copies
Sponsor Emirates ID, visa page and passport
Sponsor salary evidence and employment contract
Tenancy contract, registered as required
Passport-style photographs for each child

The document that most often causes a delay is a birth certificate issued abroad that has not been attested. It cannot be done from here, so identify it early and start it before anything else.

There is a defined period after birth for registering the child and arranging residence, and late registration attracts fines. Start the birth certificate immediately rather than waiting.
