The visa medical is the step everyone worries about and almost nobody needs to. It is a blood test and a chest X-ray, it takes under a day on the standard service, and the fee is lower than most of the internet says.

What follows is taken from DHA's own published catalogue and Dubai Health's own pages, with the gaps flagged rather than filled in.

What the test actually involves

Dubai Health lists three components: blood collection, a chest X-ray, and vaccinations for certain profession categories only.

That is it. No physical examination in the sense people imagine, no fitness assessment, no questionnaire about your lifestyle.

The legal basis is Cabinet Resolution 7 of 2008 on the medical examination system for expatriates coming to the UAE for work or residence, amended by Cabinet Resolution 75 of 2022. Dubai Health cites the 2022 resolution as the governing instrument on its service page, last updated 26 March 2026.

Blood collection and a chest X-ray. That is the whole test.

What is screened, and for whom

The screening panel, per the UAE Government portal (updated 22 October 2025) and MOHAP's summary of Cabinet Resolution 75 of 2022.
Screened forWho
HIVAll foreign nationals
TuberculosisAll foreign nationals
SyphilisNursery workers; domestic workers including housemaids, nannies and drivers; food handlers and restaurant or café staff; salon and beauty-centre workers; health-club workers
Hepatitis BThe same occupational categories as syphilis
PregnancyFemale domestic workers
LeprosyConfirmed in the panel via the Cabinet Resolution 75/2022 summary, though not named on the consumer-facing portal page

Two things worth noticing. First, most people are only screened for two conditions. The longer list applies to occupational categories where the reasoning is public-facing contact or food handling.

Second, the panel is narrow by design. It is not a general health check and it will not tell you anything about your cholesterol.

The published fee schedule

From the DHA Medical Fitness Centres Service Catalogue:

DHA Medical Fitness Centres Service Catalogue. Document stamp: 4 July 2022.
Service (DHA label)TurnaroundAED
Regular Medical Fitness Service24 working hours250
Regular, household domestic servants24 working hours300
Express Medical Fitness Service6 working hours700
Express, household domestic servants6 working hours750
VIP Medical Fitness Service2 working hours1,020
Medical Fitness at Smart Salem Center30 working minutes700
Tawajod (express test at your location in Dubai)20 minutes1,020

Three notes DHA publishes alongside those figures, verbatim in substance: delivery time is calculated during official working hours; household domestic servants pay an extra AED 50 for the pregnancy test; and "the mentioned fees do not include typing fees." DHA also reserves the right to amend prices.

The AED 320 figure you will find everywhere is not in that catalogue. Secondary sources variously claim AED 270, 300, 320, 350 and 430, disagreeing with each other and with DHA. The official regular figure is AED 250.

One corroboration worth knowing: Smart Salem's own 2026 pricing is AED 700 for the 30-minute service, exactly matching the 2022 catalogue line. That suggests the catalogue rates broadly still hold, four years on.

How to read this honestly: The catalogue is dated July 2022 and Dubai Health's live service page links pricing out rather than stating figures inline. So the right phrasing is "DHA's published schedule lists AED 250", not "it costs AED 250". Confirm at the centre. But do not accept AED 320 as the standard rate, because no official document says so.

Which tier is worth paying for

Four tiers, and the honest answer is that most people should take the cheapest.

Regular, AED 250, 24 working hours. Correct for almost everyone. The medical is rarely the critical path in a visa file, because the establishment card, the entry permit and the biometric appointment all take longer.

Express, AED 700, 6 working hours. Worth it when someone is on a tight 60-day window and the medical genuinely is the blocker. That is a real situation, just less common than the pricing implies.

Smart Salem, AED 700, 30 working minutes. The on-site process is under 10 minutes and results are delivered digitally by email. You are buying time and a nicer experience, at three locations: City Walk, Index Tower in DIFC, and Dubai Knowledge Park.

Tawajod, AED 1,020, 20 minutes, at your location. This is DHA's own service, delivered anywhere in Dubai, operated from Al Muhaisnah only. It is genuinely under-covered elsewhere and it is the right answer for an executive intake, a group hire, or anyone with mobility constraints.

Our take: pay for regular. If your visa timeline is so tight that six hours versus a day decides it, the problem is upstream, not at the clinic. See how long a Dubai setup actually takes.

Where to go

Dubai Health's directory, last updated 5 June 2026, lists 25 medical fitness centres, including Al Muhaisnah, Al Karama, Al Nahda, Al Quoz, Al Rashidiya, Bur Dubai, Al Garhoud, Zaabeel, DIFC, DAFZA, JAFZA, Dubai Airport, JVC at Circle Mall, and the three Smart Salem locations.

A small discrepancy worth flagging: Dubai Health's service page says 21 centres while its own directory lists 25. Both are dubaihealth.ae. Take the directory, and describe it as "more than 20".

Al Muhaisnah is the only 24-hour centre. Sunday to Thursday around the clock; Friday 07:00 to 15:00 and 15:00 to 23:00, closed 13:00 to 14:00 for prayers. That is a genuinely useful detail if you are trying to fit a medical around a working week.

Booking runs through the Salem portal, and walk-ins are accepted. Contact is 800 60 for Dubai Health, 24/7.

One name to ignore: "Manara" appears in some guides as a medical fitness centre. It is not on Dubai Health's list, and is most likely a confusion with a primary healthcare centre.

What happens if a result is positive

Handle this carefully, because the internet oversimplifies it into "deportation" and that is not what the regulation says.

Cabinet Resolution 75 of 2022, via MOHAP, states: "Residency is not granted to positive cases unless the purpose of the residency request is changed within a period not exceeding 30 days from the date of notification of the examination result."

So there is a 30-day window and a route involving a change of residency purpose. That is meaningfully different from an immediate exit.

Tuberculosis is not an automatic bar. Per the UAE Government portal, individuals with TB scars, active TB or drug-resistant TB receive a conditional fitness certificate and a one-year residence visa, conditional on receiving treatment in the UAE.

Leprosy is a bar, at new application and at renewal, per the Cabinet Resolution 75/2022 summary.

DHA runs formal processes titled "Manage Unfit Cases after Medical Fitness Screening" and "Manage Repatriation of Unfit cases from Dubai" in its Standards for Medical Fitness Centers. Repatriation is DHA's own word, and it is the accurate one.

What we could not verify

Four claims we could not confirm on any official source, listed because knowing what is unverified is more useful than a confident guess.

  • Certificate validity of 90 days. Universally repeated. No DHA, Dubai Health or government portal page states a validity period. Ask the centre.
  • Under-18 exemption. Smart Salem, a DHA-approved centre, states applicants under 18 are not required to complete the test, and secondary sources corroborate. Not found verbatim on a government page.
  • Golden visa holders exempt at renewal. Hedged in every source we found. Do not rely on it.
  • An age-based exemption above 18. No evidence in any source, official or otherwise.

If a provider states any of these as settled fact, that is a signal about the rest of their advice.

What to bring

Dubai Health's document list:

  • Completed registration form
  • Valid Emirates ID or passport, original
  • Recent passport-sized photograph with a white background
  • Copy of the e-Visa

Do not eat or drink anything unusual beforehand, but there is no fasting requirement for this panel. Wear something you do not mind removing jewellery from for the X-ray.

MSM tip: Book the medical and the Emirates ID biometric appointment on the same day, in that order. The medical is 24 working hours on standard, so booking biometrics the following morning stacks the two steps cleanly instead of losing a week between them. Biometrics detail in biometrics for UAE residency.

MSM books medicals and handles the typing and submission alongside the visa file. Send the entry permit and passport copy and we will schedule it. See medical and occupational typing, or how the residency steps connect.
