Attestation for a Job Visa
Which certificates actually need attesting for a Dubai job visa, and which do not.
United Kingdom
Your solicitor tells you the apostille makes the document valid internationally. For the UAE that is simply not true, and it is the most expensive misunderstanding in this whole process.
No. The UAE is not a contracting party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an FCDO apostille does not by itself make a UK document usable here. The apostille is a required step, not the last one: the document then needs legalisation by the UAE Embassy in London and attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs once it reaches the UAE. Skipping either of those means starting again.
| Applies to | Degrees, birth, marriage and company documents |
|---|---|
| Step one | Solicitor or notary certification, for private documents |
| Step two | FCDO apostille |
| Step three | UAE Embassy in London |
| Step four | Ministry attestation in the UAE |
| Typical | Weeks rather than days |

The apostille exists to replace consular legalisation between countries that have signed the 1961 Hague Convention. The UAE has not signed it. We checked the Hague Conference status table again on 8 September 2026: 130 contracting parties are listed and the UAE is not one of them.
So the shortcut the apostille represents is not available for this destination. The document still has to go the consular route.
Private documents, which includes most degree certificates and employer letters, first need certifying by a UK solicitor or notary so the FCDO will accept them. The FCDO then issues the apostille. The UAE Embassy in London legalises the apostilled document, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs completes it once it is here.
Four steps, three organisations, two countries. Each one has its own queue.
Degree certificates above all, usually for an employment visa or a professional licence. Then birth and marriage certificates for family sponsorship, and company documents where a UK business is doing something in the UAE.
Public records like birth and marriage certificates are more straightforward than private documents, because they do not need the solicitor step first.
You do not have to be in the UK. The document travels rather than you, and the parts that happen in London happen without you being there. What we need from you is the original and a decision about how it gets to us.
Most people start this after they have already moved, which is normal and entirely workable.
| Where the document is going | Is an apostille sufficient? |
|---|---|
| A Hague Convention member state | Yes, that is the point of it |
| The UAE | No; embassy and ministry attestation still needed |
| UK degree for a UAE employment visa | No; full chain required |
| UK marriage certificate for a family visa | No; full chain required |
| A document already apostilled | Useful; it is step two of four, not four of four |
Tell us what has already been done to the document. Half the UK cases we see arrive part-completed, and knowing where you are saves repeating a step you have already paid for.
