For golden visa categories that rest on your qualifications, such as specialised talent and skilled professional routes, the degree normally has to be attested and is often required to carry Ministry of Education equivalency. Categories based purely on investment or property do not usually turn on academic documents.

What has to happen to the degree first?

Attestation, through the full chain from the issuing country to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nothing downstream — equivalency, nomination, the residency file itself — can proceed on an unattested document.

For most applicants this is the long pole, because the early steps happen in a country they no longer live in.

Where does equivalency come in?

Once the degree is attested, equivalency states what it counts as in the UAE. A skill-based nomination is judged against a level, so an assessment that fixes the level removes an argument before it starts.

It is also where an unexpected outcome surfaces — a distance-learning award or a short programme can be assessed lower than the applicant assumed, and that changes which route is realistic.

What else usually goes into the file?

Experience letters that match the claimed field, professional licences where the role is regulated, and evidence of standing in the profession. Documents issued abroad need the same attestation treatment as the degree.

The mistake we see most: Starting the nomination and dealing with the degree afterwards. The attestation chain runs through offices in another country and cannot be compressed to fit a submission that is already in progress. Do the document work first, then apply.

MSM tip: Ask the authority handling your nomination, in writing, whether it wants equivalency or only attestation. The two are confused constantly, and the wrong assumption costs either months of waiting or an incomplete file.

The item that most often causes a delay is an experience letter that does not state dates and job title precisely. Vague letters are queried, and a re-issued letter from a former employer abroad can take longer than the attestation itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all golden visa applicants need equivalency?

No. Routes based on property or investment generally do not involve academic documents. Qualification-based routes such as skilled professional and specialised talent usually do.

Can I apply while the degree is being attested?

It is a poor idea. The evidence has to be complete and consistent, and an application resting on a document still travelling through another country tends to stall.

What if my degree is assessed lower than expected?

It may change which route is realistic. That is exactly why we check recognition, duration and mode of study before the file is built around an assumption.

Are experience letters attested too?

If they were issued outside the UAE, generally yes. Documents from abroad take the same chain as the degree.

Who decides the golden visa itself?

The residency authority — ICP and the relevant emirate body. The Ministry of Education decides equivalency only; it does not grant the visa.
