Emirates ID Typing in Dubai

Typing an Emirates ID application takes ten minutes. Getting the Arabic transliteration of your name wrong follows you through every document you hold for the next decade.

What does Emirates ID typing involve?

It is the preparation and submission of the Emirates ID application through an approved channel, with the applicant details entered exactly as they appear on the passport and residence visa. The Arabic transliteration of the name is set here and carries through to future documents.

Why does the Arabic spelling matter so much?

Because it becomes your official name in the UAE system. Every subsequent document — bank records, tenancy contracts, licences, school registrations — is generated from or checked against it, and inconsistencies between them are treated as a discrepancy rather than a spelling preference.

A family where the husband, wife and children were transliterated slightly differently spends years explaining it at counters.

  • It becomes your official name in the system
  • Later documents are checked against it
  • Family inconsistencies cause repeated friction
  • Treated as a discrepancy, not a preference

What else gets entered?

Full name as per passport, nationality, date of birth, passport details, visa details and sponsor information. Every one of them has to match the source documents rather than what you usually write.

People routinely give a shortened name they use socially, and it creates a mismatch with the passport that surfaces later.

  • Full name exactly as the passport shows
  • Nationality, date of birth, passport details
  • Visa and sponsor information
  • Not the shortened name you use socially

What happens after typing?

Biometrics where required, then card production and delivery. For a renewal biometrics are not always needed; for a first card they generally are.

We tell you which applies rather than sending you to a centre to discover it.

  • Biometrics appointment where required
  • First cards generally need it
  • Renewals sometimes do not
  • Card produced and delivered afterwards

What if there is already a mismatch?

It is correctable, but it is a correction process rather than a retype, and it takes longer than the original application. Where a family has inconsistent transliterations, aligning them is worth doing deliberately rather than living with it.

Bring the existing documents so we can see what the mismatch actually is before proposing anything.

  • Corrections are possible but slower
  • Family alignment worth doing deliberately
  • Bring all existing documents
  • Diagnose before correcting

The mistake we see most: Each family member typed at a different centre at a different time, ending with three variations of the same surname in Arabic. Every subsequent transaction that involves more than one of them turns into an explanation. Type the family together, or at least check the first card before typing the second.
MSM tip: If anyone in your family already holds an Emirates ID, bring it. Matching the new application to the existing transliteration is the single easiest way to avoid years of small administrative friction.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport, original or clear copy
Residence visa page
Existing Emirates ID, for a renewal
Any family member Emirates ID, for consistency
Sponsor details
Recent photograph, where required

The most useful thing you can bring is an existing family Emirates ID. It settles the transliteration question before it becomes a problem.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Arabic spelling of my name matter?
It becomes your official name in the UAE system, and every later document is checked against it. Inconsistencies are treated as discrepancies rather than preferences.
Can the transliteration be corrected later?
Yes, but it is a correction process rather than a retype and it takes longer than the original application.
Should my family all be typed together?
Ideally. Different centres at different times is how families end up with three versions of one surname in Arabic.
Do I need biometrics?
Generally for a first card; not always for a renewal. We confirm before sending you to a centre.
How fast is typing?
Often same day where the passport and visa are ready. The delay is almost never the typing itself.
What name should I give?
Exactly what the passport shows, not the shortened version you use socially. A mismatch there surfaces later.
