Updating the Details on Your Emirates ID

A new passport, a married name, a corrected spelling. Small changes, and every one of them has to reach your Emirates ID record or something breaks later.

How do you change the details on an Emirates ID?

By filing an update with ICP supported by the document that proves the change: a new passport for a number or name change, a marriage certificate for a married name, a civil document for a correction. Where that document was issued abroad it normally needs attesting first. A mobile number update is simpler and does not carry the same evidence burden.

The new passport problem

You renew your passport, get a new number, and nothing appears to break. Then a visa renewal or an airport system reads a mismatch between the passport in your hand and the number on your records, and it becomes urgent on a day you had other plans.

Link the new passport when you get it. It is a small job done calmly or a scramble done later.

  • A new passport carries a new number
  • Records referencing the old one need updating
  • It surfaces at visa renewal and at borders
  • Do it when the passport is issued, not when it bites

Name changes and spelling corrections

Transliteration from Arabic, Urdu, Malayalam or Tagalog is not standardised, and names get recorded differently across a passport, a title deed, a bank account and an Emirates ID. Most of the time it does not matter. When it matters, it matters a great deal.

Property and inheritance are where mismatched names cause genuine trouble.

  • Transliteration differences are extremely common
  • A married name needs the marriage certificate, attested
  • Corrections need the civil document behind them
  • Match your name across records before a property transaction

What needs attesting and what does not

A document issued inside the UAE is generally usable as it is. One issued abroad, a marriage certificate or a deed poll, runs through the attestation chain in the issuing country before it will be accepted here.

That is the part with a real timeline. The filing afterwards is quick.

  • UAE-issued documents: generally usable directly
  • Foreign documents: attestation chain first
  • Certified Arabic translation where required
  • The chain, not the filing, is the slow part

Keep the records consistent

Updating the Emirates ID and leaving the residence file, or the labour contract, saying something else simply relocates the problem. The point of the exercise is that the records agree with each other.

We update the set, not the card.

  • Emirates ID and residence file updated together
  • Labour records checked for the same detail
  • Dependants' files checked where a sponsor detail changes
  • The aim is agreement across records, not one corrected card

How we handle a data update

  1. Identify the changeAnd the document that proves it.
  2. Attest if neededWhere the document was issued abroad.
  3. Translate if neededCertified, in-house.
  4. File the updateWith ICP, against the correct record.
  5. Update the residence fileSo the records agree.
  6. Confirm in writingWhat changed and where.

Change and evidence

What each update needs
ChangeDocument normally required
New passport numberNew passport, plus the old one if held
Married nameMarriage certificate, attested if issued abroad
Spelling correctionPassport and the civil document behind it
Nationality changeNew passport and naturalisation document
Mobile numberNo supporting document; a simple update
PhotographAttendance may be required
The mistake we see most: Renewing a passport and doing nothing else. Everything keeps working for months, so it feels finished, and then a visa renewal stalls on a number mismatch with a flight already booked.
MSM tip: If you are about to buy property, check that your name is spelled identically on your passport, your Emirates ID and the draft title deed before signing. Correcting a registered deed afterwards is far harder than correcting an application.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Current Emirates ID, both sides
Current passport, and the previous one if the change is a renewal
The document proving the change
The country that issued that document
Your residence visa details
Whether dependants are sponsored on your file

Tell us where the supporting document was issued. UAE-issued goes straight through; foreign-issued needs the attestation chain, and that is the whole timeline.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

I renewed my passport. Do I need to update anything?
Yes. The new passport carries a new number, and records referencing the old one need updating or a mismatch appears at your next visa step.
How do I change to my married name?
With the marriage certificate, attested if it was issued outside the UAE. That attestation is the part that takes time.
Can I correct the spelling of my name?
Yes, supported by the passport and the civil document behind it. Transliteration differences are common and worth fixing before a property transaction.
Do I need to attend in person?
It depends on the change. A photograph or biometrics may require attendance; a mobile number update does not.
How do I change my registered mobile number?
That is the simplest of these. No supporting document is needed, and it matters because official notifications go to it.
Does my residence file update automatically?
No, and leaving it inconsistent just moves the problem. We update the set so the records agree with each other.
