Emirates ID Renewal in Dubai

The Emirates ID is the card everything else asks for. It usually renews alongside the visa, and the gap between them is where people get caught.

How do you renew an Emirates ID in Dubai?

The renewal is applied for through ICP, normally alongside the residence visa renewal since the card validity follows the visa. Biometrics may be required depending on circumstances, and the new card is issued and delivered. Late renewal attracts a daily fine.

Why does it matter more than people expect?

Because it is the identity document the country actually runs on. Banks check it, clinics ask for it, landlords want it, and telecom providers will not act without it. An expired card creates friction in a dozen small places before anyone thinks about the fine.

It is also the document that proves your residence status in day-to-day life, which the visa in your passport does not do conveniently.

  • Required by banks and clinics
  • Landlords and telecoms ask for it
  • Proves residence status day to day
  • Friction starts before the fine does

When does it renew?

With the residence visa in the normal case, because the card validity is tied to it. Renewing them separately creates the situation where one is current and the other is not, which is exactly the gap that causes problems.

Where the visa renewal is delayed, the card renewal is delayed with it.

  • Tied to the residence visa
  • Renewed in the same cycle
  • Separate renewals create a gap
  • A delayed visa delays the card

What about the fine?

A daily fine applies from expiry, up to a maximum. It is not enormous per day, which is precisely why people let it run, and the cumulative figure surprises them.

Our guide covers the amounts. The practical point is that the fine is entirely avoidable and the card renews quickly when the visa is in order.

  • Daily fine from expiry
  • Capped at a maximum
  • Small daily amounts accumulate
  • Entirely avoidable with a diary entry

Do you need biometrics again?

Sometimes. It depends on circumstances including how long since the last capture and whether details have changed. Children in particular are recaptured as they grow.

We tell you whether an appointment is needed rather than sending you to a centre to find out.

  • Not always required at renewal
  • Depends on time since last capture
  • Children recaptured as they grow
  • We confirm before you travel to a centre

What the Emirates ID is needed for

Everyday transactions that check it
TransactionCard required
Bank account operationsYes
Clinic and hospital registrationYes
Tenancy and EjariYes
Telecom servicesYes
Government portalsYes
The mistake we see most: Assuming the card arrives automatically because the visa was renewed. The visa and the card are related but the card still has to be produced and collected, and people discover months later that it was never picked up.
MSM tip: Photograph both sides of every family member card and keep the images somewhere you can reach from your phone. When a clinic or a bank asks for the number and the card is at home, that photo saves the trip.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Current Emirates ID
Passport with the residence visa page
Visa renewal status, if in progress
Recent photograph, where required
Sponsor details for a dependant renewal
Any fines already notified

The most useful thing to send is the visa position. The card follows the visa, so where the visa stands determines what can be done with the card.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does an Emirates ID need renewing?

What is the fine for late renewal?
A daily fine applies from expiry, capped at a maximum. Our fine guide covers the amounts; the practical point is that it is avoidable.
Do I need biometrics again?
