Free Zone to Mainland Transfer
Moving a residence visa from a free zone employer to a mainland one, or the reverse.
Inter-Emirate
People say "transfer" as though the visa slides across a map. It does not. The Dubai one ends and an Abu Dhabi one begins, and the difference matters to your family.
By cancelling the Dubai residence and having the new employer issue a fresh one under the Abu Dhabi authority. Despite the word transfer, nothing physically moves: it is a cancellation and a reissue, run in a sequence that keeps you lawfully resident throughout. Each emirate administers residence through its own authority, which is why an employer move across the border is more than a change of address.
| Really is | Cancellation in one emirate, issue in the other |
|---|---|
| Authorities | GDRFA in Dubai; the Abu Dhabi authority the other side |
| Dependants | Moved with you, not automatically |
| Then follows | Medical, Emirates ID, stamping |
| Watch | The gap between cancellation and new issue |
| Also affects | Ejari, schooling and insurance |

The mental model people bring is a change of address. The reality is closer to leaving and arriving: the Dubai residence is cancelled and a new one is issued under the other emirate's authority, with the usual medical and Emirates ID steps behind it.
Understanding that changes how you plan the month, because a gap in the middle is a real thing that can happen to you.
Dependants are sponsored on your visa, so when yours is cancelled theirs is affected. They have to be dealt with in the same plan rather than discovered afterwards.
This is the part that catches people, particularly where children are mid-school-year and the school holds records tied to the old visa.
Health insurance is regulated differently between emirates, your tenancy registration is emirate-specific, and school records, bank mandates and vehicle registration all reference where you are resident.
None of these stop the visa move. All of them arrive in the same fortnight and they are what makes the month feel heavy.
Plenty of people work in Abu Dhabi and remain resident in Dubai, or the reverse. Whether your employer requires the residence to sit in their emirate depends on the employer and the structure, not on where you sleep.
Ask them directly before assuming. It is occasionally a question nobody in HR has actually checked.
| Item | What happens to it |
|---|---|
| Residence visa | Cancelled and reissued, not moved |
| Emirates ID | Reprocessed with the new residence |
| Medical fitness test | Done again |
| Dependant visas | Cancelled and reissued with yours |
| Health insurance | Requirements differ by emirate |
| Tenancy registration | Emirate-specific; redone where you move |
