Free Zone to Mainland Visa Transfer in Dubai

A free zone visa and a mainland visa look identical in your passport. They are issued by different authorities under different rules, and moving between them is not a formality.

Can you transfer a visa from a free zone to a mainland company?

Yes, and it is common when people change employer. The free zone cancels its visa and work permit through its own authority, and the mainland employer issues a new work permit and residence visa through the labour and immigration route. The two sides do not talk to each other, so the sequencing is the job: your grace period runs from the cancellation, not from your last day at work.

Two authorities that do not speak to each other

Your free zone handles its own visas. A mainland employer works through the federal labour route and the residency authority. Neither knows what the other is doing, and nobody is coordinating on your behalf unless somebody is paid to.

That is the whole reason this goes wrong: two competent halves, no middle.

  • The free zone cancels its own permit and visa
  • The mainland employer files separately
  • No automatic handover between them
  • Coordination is the actual service

The clock you are actually on

Your grace period runs from the date the free zone cancels, not from your last day in the office, and those can be weeks apart. People plan around their resignation date and are surprised by the real one.

Get the cancellation date in writing from the free zone. It is the only date that matters.

  • Grace runs from cancellation, not from resignation
  • The two dates are often weeks apart
  • Ask the free zone for the cancellation date in writing
  • Plan the mainland filing against that date

What the new employer has to have ready

A valid establishment card, available quota, and an activity on their licence that fits your job title. If any of those is missing, your paperwork waits while they sort out something that has nothing to do with you.

Ask them to confirm all three before you resign. It is a fair question and a good employer will not mind it.

  • A valid establishment card on their immigration file
  • Quota available for another employee
  • A licensed activity matching the role
  • Confirm before resigning, not after

Going the other way

Mainland to free zone runs on the same logic in reverse, and is often slightly simpler because free zones tend to process their own visas as a package.

The cancellation discipline is identical though. Get the date, plan against it.

  • Mainland to free zone follows the same shape
  • Free zones often handle their side as one package
  • The cancellation date still governs
  • Dependants still move with you

How we handle a free zone to mainland move

  1. Check the receiving sideEstablishment card, quota, activity.
  2. Get the cancellation dateIn writing, from the free zone.
  3. Plan the windowFiling timed against the grace period.
  4. Cancel with the free zoneVisa and permit closed properly.
  5. File on the mainland sideWork permit, then entry or status change.
  6. Medical, Emirates ID, stampingThen dependants moved across.

Free zone and mainland compared

Difference by side
Position
Free zone visaIssued by the zone authority
Mainland visaIssued through the labour and immigration route
Who cancelsThe current employer, on their own side
Who issuesThe new employer, on theirs
Coordination between themNone; it has to be managed
Your grace periodRuns from the cancellation date
The mistake we see most: Resigning from a free zone job on the assumption that the mainland employer can start filing immediately. They cannot begin until your cancellation is done, and if their quota or establishment card is not in order you lose that time from your own grace period.
MSM tip: Before you resign, ask the new employer for a copy of their trade licence and confirmation that they have quota. If they hesitate at that request, you have learned something useful about how the rest of the process will go.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport, current residence visa and Emirates ID
Your current free zone and its name
Your cancellation date, once you have it in writing
The new employer's trade licence

The cancellation date and the new employer's licence are the two documents that let us plan this. Everything else can follow.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move from a free zone job to a mainland one?
Yes, and it is routine. The free zone cancels its visa and the mainland employer issues a new one; the work is in sequencing the two.
When does my grace period start?
From the date the free zone cancels, not from your last working day. Those are often weeks apart, and people plan against the wrong one.
What does my new employer need in place?
A valid establishment card, available quota, and a licensed activity matching your role. Ask them to confirm all three before you resign.
Do the two authorities coordinate?
No. The free zone and the mainland route are separate, and nothing passes between them automatically. That coordination is the service.
Can I do it without leaving the country?
Usually, through an in-country status change, depending on your nationality and current visa. We check that at the start.
What about my family?
Dependants are sponsored on your visa, so they move with you and need to be in the same plan.
