Establishment Card Renewal in Dubai

An expired establishment card does not announce itself. You find out when a visa application will not go through and somebody needs to start on Sunday.

What happens if a Dubai establishment card expires?

Your company immigration file stops working. New employment visas cannot be filed, renewals stall and cancellations become awkward, because the card is what identifies your company to the immigration authority. Nothing warns you at the moment it lapses; it surfaces the next time somebody tries to process a visa on the file.

Why it catches companies out

Because the trade licence gets all the attention. Owners diarise the licence renewal, the accountant chases it, the free zone sends reminders. The establishment card sits behind it on a different date and nobody owns it.

Then a new hire cannot be processed and the recruitment you did in August is stuck in September.

  • The trade licence gets watched; the card does not
  • They frequently expire on different dates
  • No reminder arrives when it lapses
  • It surfaces through a failed visa application

The licence has to be valid first

You cannot renew the immigration card on a lapsed trade licence. If both have expired, the licence is renewed first and the card follows, and that ordering is the whole reason a "simple renewal" sometimes takes two weeks.

Tell us the state of both. Half a picture produces half a timeline.

  • A valid trade licence underpins the card renewal
  • Both expired means the licence goes first
  • Ejari or lease position may be checked behind the licence
  • Send both expiry dates at the outset

What stays frozen while it is lapsed

Everything that touches the company immigration file. New employment visas, renewals for existing staff, cancellations for leavers, and dependant visas that hang off employee sponsorship.

A leaver stuck mid-cancellation is the awkward one, because their own grace period keeps running while your file is stuck.

  • New employment visas cannot be filed
  • Existing staff renewals stall
  • Cancellations for leavers are blocked
  • Employee grace periods keep running regardless

Getting ahead of it permanently

We keep the licence date, the card date and the visa renewal dates for your staff in one place and tell you before any of them fall due. That is unglamorous and it is most of the value.

One diary beats three people each assuming somebody else is watching.

  • Licence, card and staff visa dates tracked together
  • Reminders before expiry, not after
  • Renewals grouped where the dates allow
  • One point of contact for the file

Where your file stands

Status and action
StatusWhat it means
Card valid, licence validFile working; diarise both dates
Card expired, licence validStraight card renewal
Both expiredLicence first, then the card
Card expiring within a monthRenew now, before it blocks anything
Visa application already failedThe card is the usual reason; send both dates
The mistake we see most: Assuming the trade licence renewal renewed everything. They are separate registrations with separate dates, and a company can hold a perfectly valid licence while its immigration file is dead.
MSM tip: Put the establishment card expiry in the same calendar entry as the trade licence, even though the dates differ. Two reminders in one place is the only version of this that survives a change of office manager.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Trade licence copy, with its expiry date
Current establishment card, or its number
Owner or manager passport and Emirates ID
Tenancy or Ejari details for the premises
Details of any visa work currently stuck
Your free zone or mainland status

Send both expiry dates in the first message. Which one goes first decides the timeline, and we cannot tell you the timeline without them.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an establishment card actually do?
It identifies your company to the immigration authority. Every employment visa, renewal and cancellation on your file runs through it.
What breaks when it expires?
New visas, staff renewals and cancellations all stall. Companies usually discover it when a new hire cannot be processed.
Can I renew it if my trade licence has expired?
No. The licence is renewed first and the card follows, which is why a "quick renewal" occasionally takes a fortnight.
Will anyone remind me before it expires?
Nothing reliable arrives. The trade licence gets chased by several parties; the card sits behind it on a different date with nobody watching.
An employee is mid-cancellation and it is stuck. What now?
Send both expiry dates today. Their grace period keeps running while your file is frozen, so this one is genuinely urgent.
Do free zone companies have one too?
Free zones handle the immigration file arrangement differently depending on the zone. Tell us which zone and we will tell you what applies to you.

Visa work suddenly stuck?

Send your trade licence and establishment card dates. The card is usually the reason.
