Employment Visa in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is not Dubai with a different postcode. The residency authority is different, the service channels are different, and assuming otherwise is how a file stalls.

How is an Abu Dhabi employment visa different from a Dubai one?

The work permit stage is federal and runs through MoHRE for mainland employers in both emirates. The residency stage differs: Abu Dhabi has its own residency authority and service centres rather than Dubai GDRFA, so applications, medicals and Emirates ID appointments are handled through Abu Dhabi channels.

What decides which emirate processes the visa?

Where the employing company holds its licence, not where the employee lives. Someone living in Dubai and working for an Abu Dhabi company is processed through Abu Dhabi, which surprises people who assumed residence dictated it.

For free zone employers, the free zone authority handles its side and federal immigration follows.

  • The company licence location decides the route
  • Employee residence does not change it
  • Free zone employers use their own authority
  • Commuting between emirates is common and not a problem

What is actually the same?

The federal parts. Work permit approval for mainland employers, the requirement for a medical fitness test, Emirates ID registration and health insurance all apply in both emirates.

What differs is which counters and portals you use, and how their queues behave.

  • Work permit stage for mainland employers
  • Medical fitness test requirement
  • Emirates ID registration
  • Health insurance as a condition of residence

What catches companies out?

Filing through the wrong emirate, usually because the PRO is used to Dubai. The file is refused and has to be re-lodged, losing whatever time the queue had already consumed.

The second is a medical or Emirates ID appointment booked at a centre in the wrong emirate, which is the same mistake at a smaller scale.

  • Applications lodged in the wrong emirate
  • Appointments booked at the wrong centre
  • Assuming Dubai timelines apply
  • Company records inconsistent across emirates

What about employees who live in Dubai?

Very common, and entirely normal. The visa is processed where the company is licensed, and the employee commutes. Nothing about living in another emirate affects the validity of the residence visa.

What it does affect is convenience: appointments will be in Abu Dhabi, so build travel time into the plan.

  • Living in another emirate is normal and permitted
  • Appointments follow the processing emirate
  • Build travel time into the schedule
  • Tenancy in Dubai does not change the visa route

The mistake we see most: A Dubai-based PRO filing an Abu Dhabi company residency application through Dubai channels out of habit. It is refused, the file restarts, and a joining date that was already tight becomes impossible. Confirm the licensing emirate before anything is lodged.
MSM tip: If your employee lives in Dubai and will process in Abu Dhabi, book the medical and Emirates ID appointments on the same day. Two separate trips across the emirates costs a full working day more than it needs to.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Company trade licence and establishment card
Employee passport copy and photographs
Signed offer letter or employment contract
Current visa status of the employee
Attested qualifications, where the role requires them
The intended joining date

The detail that most often causes a delay is an inconsistency between the trade licence and the establishment card, particularly after a company has moved premises. Check both match before filing.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Abu Dhabi employment visa different from a Dubai one?
The work permit stage is federal and broadly the same. Residency processing differs, because Abu Dhabi has its own authority and service centres rather than Dubai GDRFA.
My employee lives in Dubai. Does that matter?
No. The visa is processed where the company is licensed, and living in another emirate is normal. It only affects where appointments are held.
Can I process an Abu Dhabi company visa through Dubai?
No. Filing through the wrong emirate gets the application refused and the file has to be re-lodged.
Do free zone companies work differently?
Yes. The free zone authority handles its side and federal immigration follows, regardless of which emirate the free zone sits in.
Is the medical the same?
The requirement is the same, but the appointment is at an Abu Dhabi centre when the visa is processed there.
Can you handle both emirates?
Yes. We run files in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the first thing we confirm is which emirate the company is licensed in.
