How does a Dubai 30-day visit visa work?

It permits a stay of 30 days from the date you enter the UAE, and it must be used within a separate validity window that starts when the visa is issued. It is applied for before travel through a sponsor, an airline or an approved agency, and it can usually be extended once inside the country.

What are the two clocks, and why do they catch people out?

The first is the entry window. Once the visa is issued you have a set period in which to actually arrive in the UAE, and if you do not travel in that window the visa lapses unused.

The second is the stay itself. The 30 days start counting from the day you enter, not from the day the visa was issued. Someone who applies early, travels late and then counts from the issue date will get the maths wrong in the direction that costs money.

Is 30 days actually enough for your trip?

For a holiday or a short family visit, usually. For someone coming to look for work, meet suppliers or set up a company, often not — and extending later costs more than applying for a longer visa at the outset.

We ask what the trip is really for before applying, because that is a cheaper conversation than an extension.

Who can sponsor the application?

A UAE resident family member, a hotel or tour operator, an airline in some cases, or a licensed agency acting on your behalf. The sponsor route affects what documentation is required and who carries responsibility if something goes wrong.

What happens if plans change after issue?

It depends which clock is affected. If travel is delayed inside the entry window, nothing changes. If the window will lapse, the visa is generally wasted and a fresh application is needed.

If you are already in the country and need longer, that is an extension rather than a new visa, and it has its own conditions.

The mistake we see most: Counting the 30 days from the day the visa was issued rather than the day of arrival, or the reverse — assuming the entry window is as long as the stay. Both errors end the same way, with someone unknowingly overstaying. Get the two dates written down and diarised on the day the visa comes through.
MSM tip: Do not apply weeks before you are certain of travel dates. The entry window starts running at issue, and a visa applied for too early can lapse before the trip happens, which means paying twice.
