Dubai Visit Visa for Parents

Bringing parents over is the one visa application people get emotional about, and the one where the practical details — insurance, duration, medication — matter most.

Can I sponsor my parents on a visit visa in Dubai?

Yes. A UAE resident can sponsor parents for a visit visa, applying before they travel. The visa permits a stay counted from the date of entry, and the sponsor carries responsibility for the visitor throughout. Medical insurance covering the stay is strongly advisable and is often required.

How is a visit different from sponsoring parents for residence?

Completely, and the two get confused constantly. A visit visa allows a stay of weeks; parent residence sponsorship is a long-term arrangement with a salary test, insurance obligations and a deposit in many cases.

Families often start by visiting and later ask about residence. They are separate applications with separate rules, and the visit does not create an entitlement to the second.

  • A visit visa is temporary and does not lead automatically to residence
  • Parent residence sponsorship has salary and insurance conditions
  • The salary rule is covered in our family visa guide
  • Many families visit first and consider residence later

Why does insurance matter more for parents?

Because older visitors are more likely to need care, and healthcare here is expensive without cover. Insurance for the visit period is commonly required as part of the application and is worth having even where it is not.

Check that existing conditions are covered rather than assuming. A policy that excludes exactly the condition your father takes daily medication for is not much use.

  • Cover for the full period of stay
  • Check the treatment of pre-existing conditions specifically
  • Emergency and hospitalisation cover matters most
  • Buy before travel, not after arrival

What duration should you choose?

Longer than feels necessary, usually. Parents visiting from abroad rarely come for a fortnight, flights are expensive, and extending mid-visit means paperwork during what is supposed to be family time.

If they are coming for two months, apply for the longer visa rather than the short one plus an extension.

  • A short visa suits a defined, brief trip
  • A longer visa avoids an extension mid-stay
  • Extending later usually costs more in total
  • Consider return flight flexibility when choosing

What should you prepare before they fly?

Insurance, medication in original packaging with a prescription or doctor's letter, and a clear note of the entry deadline and last day of stay.

The medication point is practical rather than bureaucratic: some common medicines are controlled here, and travelling with loose tablets and no documentation causes avoidable trouble at the airport.

  • Insurance certificate covering the whole stay
  • Medication in original packaging with a prescription or letter
  • Both key dates written down and diarised
  • Return flight booked or clearly planned

The mistake we see most: Buying the cheapest travel insurance without reading the pre-existing conditions clause. It is discovered in a hospital, at the worst possible moment, by a family already dealing with something frightening. Spend the extra and check that clause specifically.
MSM tip: Have your parents carry a short letter from their doctor listing their medication and conditions, in English. It costs nothing, it helps at the airport, and if they do need treatment here it saves a long conversation nobody wants to be having.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport copies for each parent, with sufficient validity
Recent passport-style photographs
Sponsor's passport, visa page and Emirates ID
Proof of relationship, where requested
Intended travel dates and length of stay
Any previous UAE visa history for the visitors

The document that most often causes a delay is proof of relationship where surnames differ across the family, which is common in several nationalities. Tell us early and we will advise what evidence works.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sponsor both parents at once?
Yes, applications are made for each person but they are normally handled together so the travel dates line up.
Do my parents need medical insurance?
It is often required as part of the application, and it is strongly advisable regardless. Check specifically how the policy treats pre-existing conditions.
How long can they stay?
It depends on the visa taken. Longer durations are available and usually make sense for parents travelling a long distance.
Is this the same as getting them residence?
No. Parent residence sponsorship is a separate, longer-term application with a salary test and other conditions. A visit visa does not lead to it automatically.
Can the visit be extended?
Often yes, as a separate application before the current stay expires. Choosing a longer visa at the start usually costs less overall.
What if they need to stay longer for medical reasons?
Tell us as early as possible. Options exist but they narrow considerably once a stay has already expired.
