Can you extend a Dubai visit visa without leaving the country?

Yes, in most cases. A visit or tourist visa can be extended inside the UAE for a further 30 days by applying through ICP or GDRFA and paying the extension fee. The application must be made before the current visa expires. Once it has expired you are in overstay, and a daily fine applies.

When should you apply for the extension?

Before the last week, and ideally with ten days in hand. Applications are not always instant, and a query from immigration on day twenty-nine leaves no room to answer it.

Apply early and the worst case is that you paid for a stay you did not need. Apply late and the worst case is a fine that grows daily until you fix it.

  • File while the current visa is still valid, not on its expiry date
  • Allow time for a query or a document re-upload
  • The new period runs from the end of the current one, so nothing is wasted by applying early
  • Set the reminder on the entry date, when you still remember the numbers

How many times can a visit visa be extended?

It depends on the visa type. Several visit and tourist visas allow two consecutive 30-day extensions inside the country; some do not allow any. The rules vary by the category the visa was issued under and are changed from time to time.

What does an overstay actually cost?

A fixed amount per day, from the day after your permitted stay ends, accruing until you exit the country or regularise your status. There is no cap that makes waiting sensible.

The second cost is not financial. An unpaid overstay attaches to the passport number and surfaces the next time that person applies for any UAE visa, including years later.

  • The fine runs per day from the first day of overstay
  • It must be settled before departure or before a new visa is issued
  • An unpaid overstay blocks future applications on the same passport
  • Grace periods exist for some residence visa situations, not for expired visit visas

Extension or status change: which is right for you?

If you are staying a few more weeks as a visitor, extend. If you have a job offer or are being sponsored by family for the long term, a status change to a residence entry permit is usually the better move, because it converts your stay into residence rather than buying more visitor time.

The two are not interchangeable, and one closes the door on the other once the visa lapses.

The mistake we see most: Assuming there is a grace period after a visit visa expires. There is not. Grace periods apply to some residence visa situations, and people carry that idea across to visit visas. The overstay fine starts the day after the visa ends.
