60-Day Visit Visa Extension in Dubai

You can extend more than once. What you cannot do is exceed the total the rules allow, and since February the day after expiry is no longer forgiving.

How long can a Dubai visit visa be extended for?

GDRFA states that a visit visa may be extended by decision of the issuing authority one or more times, not exceeding 120 days in total. So the constraint is the overall ceiling rather than a fixed number of extensions. Since February 2026 there is no grace period on a visit or tourist visa, so fines begin the day after it expires rather than after a buffer.

The ceiling is 120 days, not a number of extensions

People ask how many times they can extend. That is the wrong question. GDRFA frames it as a total: extensions may be granted one or more times, not exceeding 120 days altogether.

So a shorter first extension leaves more room later, and someone who has already used most of the allowance has less flexibility than they think.

  • The limit is cumulative, not a count
  • Each extension eats into the same 120 days
  • Plan the whole stay, not the next month
  • Granted at the issuing authority's discretion

The grace period is gone

This is the change that catches people who last did this a year ago. A visit or tourist visa used to be followed by a short buffer before fines started. Since February 2026 that buffer is no longer there, and fines run from the first day after expiry.

If your plan relied on a few forgiving days at the end, it does not work any more.

  • No buffer after a visit visa expires
  • Fines accrue from the first day
  • Applies to visit and tourist visas
  • Cancelled residence permits are a different matter

Residence cancellation is not the same thing

Do not read across. Someone whose residence visa has been cancelled still has a window, tiered by category, and that is unchanged. It is only the visit and tourist side that lost its buffer.

People conflate the two constantly, usually to their cost in one direction or the other.

  • Cancelled residence permits keep tiered windows
  • Visit visas now have none
  • Different rules, different situations

When extending stops being the answer

If you are approaching the 120-day ceiling and still need to be here, extension is not the route. A status change onto a residence visa, or an exit and re-entry, is what you are actually looking at.

That conversation is better had at day 70 than day 115.

  • Approaching the ceiling means changing route
  • A status change may be available in-country
  • An exit and re-entry is the fallback
  • Start the conversation well before the limit

How we handle a further extension

  1. Count what you have usedAgainst the 120-day total.
  2. Check the expiry preciselyThere is no buffer to absorb a slip.
  3. File the extensionFrom inside the country, through GDRFA.
  4. Confirm the new dateIn writing, so nobody guesses.
  5. Flag the ceilingIf this is your last available extension.
  6. Plan the exit routeStatus change or departure, before it bites.

The mistake we see most: Planning around a grace period that no longer exists. People who extended a visit visa a year or two ago remember a buffer at the end and budget their last few days against it. That buffer went in February, and the fines now start immediately.
MSM tip: Write your actual expiry date somewhere you will see it, not the date you think you arrived plus sixty. Visit visa durations are counted from entry and people are routinely a day or two out, which used to be absorbed and now is not.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport copy and the current visit visa
Your entry date into the UAE
Details of any extension already granted
How much longer you need to stay
Whether a job offer or sponsor is in prospect
Any overstay already accrued

Tell us about extensions you have already had. They count towards the same 120 days, and we cannot advise on what is left without knowing what is used.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times can I extend a Dubai visit visa?
GDRFA frames it as a total rather than a count: extensions may be granted one or more times, not exceeding 120 days altogether.
Is there still a grace period after my visit visa expires?
No. Since February 2026 visit and tourist visas carry no grace period, and fines run from the first day after expiry.
Does that apply to my cancelled residence visa too?
No. Cancelled residence permits keep their tiered windows. It is only the visit and tourist side that lost the buffer.
What if I reach 120 days and still need to stay?
Extension stops being available. A status change onto a residence visa, or an exit and re-entry, is what you are looking at.
Can I extend from inside the country?
Yes, that is the point of it. You do not need a border run to extend, though eligibility is confirmed case by case.
I have already overstayed. What now?
Fines are accruing daily from the first day. Come in and we will confirm the position and the cleanest way to clear it.
