Driving Licence Translation in Dubai

Whether your licence converts straight over or you start from lessons, the same small document has to happen first. It is the step that delays people by a week for no reason.

Does a foreign driving licence need translating in Dubai?

If it is not already in Arabic or English, yes. RTA requires a certified Arabic translation before the file is opened, and that applies whether your country is on the list that converts without a test or you have to go through lessons and an examination. The translation has to be a certified legal translation rather than an informal one.

It comes before everything, not after

People treat this as paperwork to sort out once they know whether they can convert. It is the other way round: the file cannot be opened without it, and the file is what tells you which route you are on.

A one-page translation delaying a licence by a week is an entirely self-inflicted problem.

  • Required at file opening
  • Not something to do afterwards
  • Short document, quick turnaround
  • Delays here are avoidable

Conversion or testing, it is needed either way

A large number of nationalities can exchange a licence without taking a test. Everyone else takes lessons and an examination. The translation requirement does not distinguish between them; both start with an RTA file.

So do not wait to find out which category you fall into.

  • Direct exchange is available to many nationalities
  • Others go through lessons and testing
  • The translation is required for both
  • Getting it early costs nothing

Certified means certified

A translation done by a colleague who speaks Arabic is not what is being asked for. It has to be a certified legal translation, stamped by a translator whose work the authority accepts.

This is the same standard the courts and ministries apply, and it is the reason people end up paying twice.

  • Informal translations are not accepted
  • It must be stamped and certified
  • The same standard as court and ministry work
  • Paying twice is the common outcome of guessing

While you have it out

If you are new here, the licence is rarely the only document that needs translating. Degree certificates, marriage and birth certificates often follow within the same few months.

Doing them together is cheaper and saves repeating the same errand.

  • Degree certificates for employment or licensing
  • Marriage and birth certificates for family visas
  • Batching translations saves time and cost
  • Ask what else you are likely to need

Do you need one?

Licence and requirement
Your licenceTranslation needed?
In ArabicNo
In EnglishGenerally not
In any other languageYes, certified into Arabic
Converting without a testYes, still required
Going through lessons and testingYes, still required
The mistake we see most: Waiting to find out whether your nationality can exchange a licence before arranging the translation. The file cannot open without it, and the file is what answers the question, so waiting achieves nothing but a week of delay.
MSM tip: Photograph both sides of your existing licence before you hand the original anywhere. People lose the ability to prove what the licence said at exactly the moment they need it, and a photo takes five seconds.

What documents do you need?

The country that issued it
The language it is written in
Your passport copy

Any other documents you expect to need translating

A clear photograph of both sides is usually enough to start. Send the originals when you come in.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my driving licence need translating for RTA?
If it is not already in Arabic or English, yes, and it is needed before the file is opened.
I can convert without a test. Do I still need it?
Yes. The requirement applies whether you exchange the licence directly or go through lessons and testing.
Can a friend translate it for me?
No. It has to be a certified legal translation, stamped by a translator whose work the authority accepts.
How long does it take?
It is a one-page document, so it is quick. The delay people experience comes from starting it late, not from the translation itself.
My licence is in English. Am I fine?
Generally yes, though bring it in and we will confirm rather than have you find out at the counter.
What else will I need translating?
Most people new here follow up with degree certificates and civil documents for visas. Batching them is cheaper than separate trips.
