Oman Visa for UAE Residents

Oman is the easiest GCC trip to make from Dubai and the one people most often get wrong, because the rules were relaxed years ago and most of the advice online still describes the old ones.

Do UAE residents need a visa for Oman?

Usually not in advance. Oman relaxed its rules for GCC residents, so a valid UAE residence permit lets holders across effectively all professions enter on arrival or take a pre-arranged eVisa, provided the permit has three months left and the passport six. A few categories are excluded, and some nationalities enter visa-free regardless. The conditions come from the Royal Oman Police and are confirmed before travel.

Three routes, and which one is yours

Oman does not have one answer. Depending on your passport and your residence permit, you may enter visa-free for a short tourist stay, enter on arrival on the GCC resident concession, or apply for an eVisa in advance.

People read about one of the three, assume it applies to them, and set off. That is where it goes wrong.

  • Visa-free entry, for some nationalities and short stays
  • eVisa applied for in advance through the ROP portal
  • The GCC resident route, open across most professions
  • Which applies is settled by your passport first

Check the dates before you check anything else

Two numbers decide most Oman trips: three months left on your residence permit, six months on your passport. Neither is negotiable at the border and both are entirely visible to you today.

The permit rule is the one that bites. A card expiring in ten weeks is fine for everything else in your life and not enough for this.

  • Residence permit: at least three months remaining
  • Passport: at least six months from the date of entry
  • Both are checked; the permit is the forgotten one
  • Renew first where either is close

Driving, flying, or changing status

The purpose of the trip changes what you need. A weekend in Musandam by car is a different file from flying to Muscat, and both are different again from a border run made to reset a UAE visa.

Tell us which one it is. We keep the road trip and the visa-change run on separate pages for exactly that reason.

  • By road, usually to Musandam or Hatta border posts
  • By air, to Muscat or Salalah
  • A border run made purely to change UAE status
  • Each has its own document and timing considerations

Who is still excluded

A short list of categories sits outside the concession: housekeepers, students, private drivers, and people sponsored as the spouse of a resident rather than employed in their own right.

If that is you, it is not a refusal. It means applying for the eVisa in advance instead, which is routine when there is time for it.

  • Housekeepers and private drivers
  • Students
  • Spouses sponsored as dependants
  • For these, the eVisa is applied for beforehand

How we handle an Oman visa for a UAE resident

  1. Send two documentsPassport and Emirates ID. Most of it is answered from those.
  2. Confirm the routeVisa-free, eVisa, or the resident concession.
  3. Prepare the fileOnly where an application is actually needed.
  4. Submit through the ROP portalWhere an eVisa applies.
  5. Track itYou hear from us rather than refreshing a page.

Which route applies

Route by situation
Your situationLikely route
Nationality on the visa-free list, short tourist stayVisa-free entry, confirmed first
Valid permit with three months left, most professionsGCC resident route on arrival
Housekeeper, student, private driver or sponsored spouseeVisa in advance
Travelling by road for a weekendSee our road page for the journey itself
Residence permit expiring soonRenew before travelling
The mistake we see most: Following advice from a colleague on a different passport. Oman treats nationalities very differently, and a straightforward trip for one person in the office tells you nothing reliable about your own route.
MSM tip: Photograph both sides of your Emirates ID and the photo page of your passport and send them together. Nearly all of the Oman question is answered from those two images in a single reply.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport copy, photo page
Emirates ID and residence permit, both sides
Your nationality
Travel dates and whether you are driving or flying
The purpose of the trip
Names and permits for anyone travelling with you

Nationality and the profession line on your permit decide this between them. Send both up front and the answer comes back in one message.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can UAE residents travel to Oman without a visa?
Some can, depending on nationality and the length of stay. Others need an eVisa or qualify through the GCC resident route. It is not one answer, which is why we check the passport first.
Which professions qualify for the resident route?
Effectively all of them. Oman relaxed the old restriction to selected skilled occupations, so the real questions are your permit validity and whether you fall into an excluded category.
Can I apply at the border?
Depending on your route and how you travel. Where an eVisa is required it should be approved before you set off rather than arranged at the post.
Is driving different from flying?
The route rules are the same, but the practicalities are not. Our road page covers the drive and the border posts themselves.
Does my family get the same answer as me?
Each traveller is assessed on their own passport and permit. Spouses on dependant visas frequently land on a different route from the sponsor.
My Emirates ID expires next month. Does it matter?
Yes. Both documents are checked at entry, so a permit close to expiry is worth renewing before the trip rather than after.
