Occupational Health Card Renewal in Dubai

Nobody renews a health card early. They renew it the week an inspection is announced, or the week after one went badly.

How do you renew an occupational health card in Dubai?

The card runs for one year from issue, so this comes round annually. You repeat the screening at an approved centre and file the renewal before the current card expires rather than relying on the short window afterwards. It is the same process as the first issue rather than a lighter one, so it needs the same appointment time. A lapsed card means staff in regulated roles are working without a current clearance, which is the business's exposure rather than theirs.

Why these lapse so reliably

Because nothing tells you. A residence visa expiring generates warnings from several directions; a health card sits in a drawer and goes quietly out of date, and the person holding it is busy running a kitchen.

Every business we help with this discovered the problem the same way, and it was not by checking.

  • No automatic reminder arrives
  • The card lives with the employee, not the file
  • Staff turnover hides the gaps
  • It surfaces at inspection, reliably

It is a full screening, not a stamp

Renewal means going back through the health check. Managers plan for it as an administrative step and are caught out when the appointment takes a morning per person and the results take their own time.

Book it three or four weeks out. Not the week it expires.

  • The screening is repeated in full
  • Results take their own time to come back
  • A deferred result needs treatment and a retest
  • Start weeks ahead, not days

Two cycles that never line up

The occupational health card and the visa medical run on separate cycles from separate authorities, so an employee can be perfectly current on one and expired on the other.

This is the reason we keep both dates in a single register per employee. Tracking one of them is worse than useless, because it feels like tracking.

  • Health card and visa medical expire independently
  • Being current on one says nothing about the other
  • Track both dates per employee in one place
  • Review the register monthly

Doing it as a batch

For a team of any size, renewing as a group beats chasing individuals. We take the register, identify who falls due in the next quarter, and run them together.

It also means one conversation with you instead of fifteen.

  • Quarterly batches rather than individual chases
  • Appointments scheduled around service hours
  • One point of contact for the business
  • Register updated as each card issues

  3. Book the screeningsBatched, around your service hours.
  4. File the renewalsWith Dubai Municipality.

  6. Update the registerNext expiry dates recorded.

Where your team stands

Status and action
StatusWhat to do
Card expired, staff still workingImmediate; this is live exposure
Expiring within a monthBook the screening now
Expiring within three monthsInclude in the next batch
New starter with no cardTreat as a first issue, not a renewal
Card lost but not expiredReplacement rather than renewal
The mistake we see most: Assuming renewal is a paperwork formality that can be done in the week it expires. It repeats the full screening, results take time, and an abnormal result needs treatment and a retest that no amount of urgency shortens.
MSM tip: Ask us for the expiry register even if you handle the renewals yourselves. Most food businesses do not have one, and the list alone usually surfaces two or three people nobody realised had lapsed.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Current health card details for each employee
Passport copies
Emirates ID or residence visa details
Your trade licence
Staff list with roles, including recent joiners
Any cards you know have already expired

Include the people you think are fine. The register nearly always turns up someone whose card expired months ago without anyone noticing.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is renewal just paperwork?
No. The screening is repeated in full, results take their own time, and an abnormal result means treatment and a retest. Plan weeks, not days.
What happens if a card expires?
Staff in regulated roles are working without a current clearance. The exposure sits with the business rather than the employee.
Does renewing the visa medical renew the health card?
No. Different authorities, different cycles. Being current on one says nothing at all about the other.
Can you renew our whole team together?
Yes, and quarterly batches are the sensible rhythm. We identify who falls due and run them as a group.
How far ahead should we start?
Three or four weeks before expiry. That absorbs appointment availability and a retest if one is needed.
We do not know who has expired. Can you find out?
That is usually the first thing we do. Building the register nearly always surfaces people nobody realised had lapsed.

Not sure whose cards are current?

Send your staff list. We will build the expiry register and tell you who is exposed.
