Occupational Health Card in Dubai

This is not the visa medical. Different authority, different card, different reason, and staff turn up at the wrong centre for it every week.

What is an occupational health card in Dubai?

A public-health clearance issued under Dubai Municipality for people working in food handling and certain other regulated occupations. It follows a health screening at an approved centre and is separate from the DHA medical fitness test used for residence visas. A worker in a restaurant or a salon typically needs both, for different reasons, at different places.

Two different cards, two different authorities

This is the confusion the whole page exists to fix. The medical fitness test is run for residence purposes under the health authority, and it decides whether your visa can be stamped. The occupational health card is a Dubai Municipality clearance about whether you are fit to handle food or work in a regulated trade.

Having one does not give you the other. Restaurant staff generally need both.

  • Visa medical: residence purposes, health authority
  • Occupational health card: public health, Municipality
  • Different centres, different applications
  • Most food-service staff need both

Who actually needs one

Anyone handling food is the clearest case: kitchen staff, waiters, baristas, bakery and supermarket workers, catering crews. Certain other trades that involve close public contact fall under it too, and the requirement generally attaches to the role rather than to the person.

If an inspector can find a member of staff without one, it is the business that has the problem.

  • Kitchen and food preparation staff
  • Service staff handling food or drink
  • Food retail and catering workers
  • Certain other regulated public-contact trades

What the screening involves

A health check at an approved centre, including blood work. It is a short appointment and the results drive whether the card is issued, deferred pending treatment, or refused.

A deferred result is not the end of anything. It usually means treatment and a retest, and it is far better handled quietly than hidden.

  • Screening at a Municipality-approved centre
  • Blood tests form part of it
  • Results decide issue, deferral or refusal
  • A deferral usually means treatment and a retest

Doing it for a team

Opening a restaurant means twenty of these at once, and doing them one at a time as staff arrive is how an opening date slips. We batch them, keep a register of expiry dates, and tell you before the renewals fall due.

It is the register that businesses find useful. Individual cards are easy; remembering thirty expiry dates is not.

  • Batch applications for new openings
  • Expiry register kept per employee
  • Renewal reminders before cards lapse
  • One point of contact rather than thirty errands

How we handle an occupational health card

  1. Confirm the requirementWhich staff need it, and whether they also need a visa medical.
  2. Prepare the applicationTyped and submitted with the right supporting documents.
  3. Book the screeningAt an approved centre, batched for teams.
  4. Track the resultsIncluding any deferral needing a retest.
  5. Card issuedCollected and handed over.
  6. Log the expirySo the renewal does not surprise you.

Which clearance do you actually need?

Purpose and authority
You needWhich one
To get a residence visa stampedDHA medical fitness test
To work handling food in DubaiMunicipality occupational health card
To open a restaurant with staffBoth, for most of the team
To renew an expiring health cardOccupational health card renewal
To renew a residence visaMedical fitness test renewal
The mistake we see most: A manager sending new kitchen staff for the visa medical and assuming the food card is covered. It is not, and the gap is usually discovered by an inspector rather than by the business.
MSM tip: Keep one spreadsheet with each employee's visa medical date and health card date side by side. They expire on different cycles, and businesses that track only one of them are always caught out by the other.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the occupational health card the same as the visa medical?
No. Different authority, different purpose, different centre. The visa medical is for residence; the health card is a Dubai Municipality public-health clearance.
Who needs an occupational health card?
Anyone handling food, and certain other regulated trades. The requirement attaches to the role rather than the person.
What does the screening involve?
A health check at an approved centre including blood work. The results decide whether the card issues, is deferred pending treatment, or is refused.
What if a result comes back abnormal?
It usually means treatment and a retest rather than the end of the matter. Handle it openly; it is a routine outcome.
Can you do our whole team at once?
Yes, and for a new opening that is the sensible way. We batch the applications and keep a register of expiry dates afterwards.
How long does the card last?
One year from issue, so it comes round annually. That is a different cycle from the visa medical, and the mismatch is what catches businesses out.
