Do you need an appointment for MOFA attestation in Dubai?

Often not. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs accepts attestation requests through its digital service, with documents submitted and returned by courier. An in-person visit is only necessary for cases the online route does not cover, and the ministry publishes its requirements before you book anything.

What does the digital service actually replace?

The queue, mostly. Attestation requests are submitted online and documents move by courier, which removes the morning most people budget for and the risk of arriving with an incomplete file.

What it does not replace is the requirement itself. The ministry still checks that everything before its own stamp has been done properly.

When is a counter visit still the right call?

Where a document is unusual, urgent in a way the courier cycle cannot serve, or part of a bundle that needs to be reconciled in person. Commercial files with several linked documents sometimes fall into this category.

It is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting to a visit because that is how it was done years ago.

What gets a submission refused?

Almost always a gap earlier in the chain. The ministry is attesting a signature applied by someone else, so if that signature is missing, or was applied by the wrong body, there is nothing for it to attest.

The second most common cause is a document that is genuine but not in the form the ministry accepts — a photocopy, or a certificate where the original was required.

The mistake we see most: Booking an appointment for a document that has not finished the chain in its own country. The slot is kept, the morning is spent, and the answer at the counter is that the file is not ready to be looked at. The appointment was never the missing piece.
MSM tip: Photograph both sides of every document before it leaves your hands, stamps included. If a query comes back at any stage, that photograph answers it the same day instead of requiring the document to be retrieved.

Can I do MOFA attestation without going in person?
In most cases yes. The ministry runs a digital attestation service with documents submitted and returned by courier, so a counter visit is the exception rather than the rule.
Why was my document refused?

Do I need the original?

Do I need a translation as well?
Often, where the document is being presented to a UAE authority. It should be done after the stamps are complete, by a Ministry of Justice licensed translator.
