Visit to Employment Visa Change in Dubai

You found the job on a visit visa. Now two clocks are running against each other: your remaining stay, and how fast your new employer files.

How do you change from a visit visa to an employment visa?

The employer applies for the work permit and entry permit first. Once the entry permit is issued, an in-country status change moves you onto it without leaving, where your nationality and visa type allow. The medical fitness test, Emirates ID and stamping then follow as normal.

Why does employer speed decide everything?

Because your visit visa is not waiting for them. The permit and entry permit take as long as they take, and every day spent on them is a day off your remaining stay.

A candidate with three weeks left and an employer who files slowly ends up either extending, exiting, or overstaying. The first two are choices; the third is what happens when nobody watches the calendar.

  • Your stay keeps running while the employer files
  • Quota issues at the company can add weeks
  • Ask for the filing date, not a reassurance
  • Extend early if the gap is going to be tight

What can you do if time runs short?

Extend the visit visa, if the type allows it, or take a short exit and come back on the new entry permit once it exists. Both are ordinary and both are better than letting the stay lapse.

Decide while you still have a week or so in hand. Options in the last two days are worse and more expensive.

  • Extend the visit visa where it is extendable
  • Or exit and re-enter on the new permit
  • Decide with a week in hand, not two days
  • Overstay is the outcome of not deciding

What does the employee actually have to do?

Sign the offer and contract, attend the medical, attend Emirates ID biometrics, and hand over the passport for stamping. Everything else is filed by the employer or its PRO.

Where the role requires an attested degree, that is the one thing that can sit on the employee side and it is worth raising immediately.

  • Sign the offer letter and contract
  • Attend the medical fitness test
  • Attend Emirates ID biometrics
  • Provide attested qualifications where required

What about family already here on your visit visa?

They are on their own visit visas, and their stays run on their own clocks. Once you are resident you can sponsor them, but that is a further set of applications after your own residence is complete.

Families frequently forget that the spouse and children need their own plan for the gap.

  • Family visit visas run on their own dates
  • You can sponsor them once you are resident
  • That is a separate application after yours
  • Plan the gap for them as well as for you

How we manage the transition

  1. We map both clocksYour remaining stay against a realistic employer timeline.
  2. Eligibility checkWhether an in-country change is open to you.
  3. Coordinate with the employerConfirming when the entry permit is actually issued.
  4. Status changeFiled once the permit exists, before your stay expires.
  5. Medical and Emirates IDBooked and attended in sequence.
  6. Family planWhat your spouse and children do during the gap.

How much time do you have?

What to do by remaining stay
Days left on your visit visaWhat to do
More than 30Let the employer file; monitor weekly
15 to 30Press for the filing date in writing
Under 15Plan an extension or an exit now
Under 5Act today; do not wait on the employer
Already expiredResolve the overstay first
The mistake we see most: Trusting "HR says it will be done next week" for three consecutive weeks. Nobody at the company is watching your visit visa expiry, because it is not their document. Set your own deadline for when you will extend or exit regardless of what the employer says.
MSM tip: If the role might need an attested degree, start the attestation the day you accept the offer. It is the one part that can take longer than everything else combined, and it is the part that sits with you rather than the employer.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport copy and current visit visa
Your arrival date and remaining days of stay
The signed offer letter, once you have it
Employer details and their filing status
Nationality, which affects change eligibility
Attested qualifications, where the role requires them

The information that changes our advice most is how many days of stay you actually have left. Send the arrival date rather than an estimate; the whole plan is built around it.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a job while on a visit visa?
You can accept an offer and change status onto an employment visa. Working before the permit is issued is not permitted, so the sequence matters.
Do I have to leave and come back?
Often not. An in-country status change avoids it where your nationality and visa type allow, which we check first.
What if my visit visa expires before the employer files?
Extend it if the type allows, or take a short exit. Decide with a week in hand rather than in the final days.
Who pays for the employment visa?
The employer is responsible for the work permit and residence visa costs for the employee. Confirm what is covered before you start.
Can my family stay while this happens?
They remain on their own visit visas with their own expiry dates. Once you are resident you can sponsor them, as a separate application.
Do I need my degree attested?
It depends on the role and the employer. If it is needed, start it immediately, because it is the slowest part and it sits with you.
