Visa Change by Air from Dubai

The air route is the fast version of the border run. It is also the one people book before checking whether they needed to leave at all.

What is an airport-to-airport visa change?

A short flight out of the UAE and back in on a new entry permit, used where an in-country status change is not open to you. You exit, and re-enter on the permit your new sponsor has already had issued. It is quicker and more comfortable than the road route, and it is only necessary when the in-country change genuinely is not available.

Before you book the flight

Ask whether you need to leave. For a great many people the in-country change is open, and every dirham spent on a same-day return to a nearby airport is wasted. That check takes one message and costs nothing.

We do it first, every time, even though the answer sometimes loses us the booking.

  • In-country eligibility is checked before anything else
  • Nationality and current visa type decide it
  • A flight is the fallback, not the default
  • The check is quick and costs nothing

The permit has to exist first

You are re-entering on something. If your new employer or family sponsor has not had the entry permit issued, there is nothing to come back on and the trip achieves nothing except a stamp.

People fly on the strength of "HR says it is being processed". That is not a permit.

  • The entry permit must be issued before you travel
  • Get the issue date from your sponsor in writing
  • "Being processed" is not the same as issued
  • The permit governs your re-entry, not your ticket

Air or road

The air route costs more and takes a few hours. The road route to the Oman border costs less and takes a day. Both do the same job, and which one suits depends on your budget and how much of a working day you can lose.

For people with a job starting on Sunday, the flight usually wins. For everyone else it is a genuine choice.

  • Air: faster, more comfortable, higher cost
  • Road: cheaper, a full day, well-established
  • Both require the entry permit to be in place
  • Choose on time and budget, not on prestige

What follows the re-entry

The flight is not the process, it is one step of it. Medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics and stamping all still follow, and the residence visa is not yours until they are done.

People come back from the airport thinking it is finished. It is barely started.

  • Medical fitness test after re-entry
  • Emirates ID biometrics
  • Residence visa stamped once results clear
  • Health insurance in place before completion

How we handle a change by air

  1. Check the in-country routeYou may not need to fly at all.
  2. Confirm the entry permitIssued, with a date, from the new sponsor.
  3. Plan the tripTimed around the permit, not around the fare.
  4. Re-entry on the permitThe change takes effect on arrival.
  5. Medical and Emirates IDBooked and attended in sequence.
  6. Stamping and handoverRenewal date supplied in writing.

Do you actually need to fly?

Route by situation
SituationLikely route
Eligible for an in-country changeNo exit needed at all
Not eligible, time-critical start dateChange by air
Not eligible, cost is the constraintRoad route to the border
Entry permit not yet issuedWait; the permit comes first
Current stay close to expiryAct now, the options are narrowing
The mistake we see most: Booking the flight before confirming the entry permit exists. The ticket is the easy part and people arrange it first, then discover the permit is a week away and the trip has to be repeated.
MSM tip: If you are flying anyway, do it early in the week. Medical fitness centres and typing offices are at their worst on a Thursday afternoon, and a Monday return gets the rest of the sequence moving immediately.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Passport copy and current visa
Your nationality, which affects the in-country option
Arrival date and current last day of stay
Entry permit from the new sponsor, with its issue date
Details of the sponsoring employer or family member
Any previous overstay or cancelled visa history

Nationality and current visa type together tell us whether you need a flight at all. Send those two before you look at fares.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to leave the country to change my visa?
Often not. An in-country status change is open to many people, and we check that before discussing flights, even though it sometimes means there is nothing to book.
What is the difference between air and road?
Time and cost. The flight takes hours and costs more; the road run to the Oman border takes a day and costs less. Both do the same job.
Can I fly before my entry permit is issued?
There would be no point. You re-enter on the permit, so without it the trip achieves nothing but a stamp in your passport.
Is the visa done once I land back?
No. Medical fitness, Emirates ID biometrics and stamping all follow. The re-entry is one step, not the finish.
I have overstayed. Does that change things?
It adds fines and complicates the position. Tell us the real dates and we will tell you what is genuinely open to you.
Can my family do this at the same time?
Each person is assessed on their own visa and nationality, but planning the trip together usually makes sense once we have looked at everyone.

Told you need to fly out?

Send your nationality and current visa. We will tell you if the trip is actually necessary.
