Student Visa in Dubai

A student here can be sponsored by their university or by a parent, and the two routes suit very different families. The age rules are where it gets interesting.

Who sponsors a student visa in the UAE?

Either the accredited university or college the student attends, or a parent who is resident in the UAE. Where a parent sponsors, a son can be sponsored up to the age of 25 and a daughter regardless of age until she marries. The institution issues a certificate specifying the duration of study, which supports the application either way.

The 25 rule, and what happens after it

This is the moment that catches families. A son on his father's visa can be sponsored while studying up to 25, and then that route closes and he needs his own basis to stay: university sponsorship, employment, or something else.

It arrives predictably and is still treated as a surprise, usually in the middle of a final year.

  • Sons: parental sponsorship while studying, up to 25
  • Daughters: until marriage, without the same age cut-off
  • The cut-off is foreseeable; plan a year ahead
  • University sponsorship is the usual next step

University or parent, and which is better

Parental sponsorship keeps the student on the family file, which is simpler while it lasts and ends when the parent's own residence does. University sponsorship is independent of the parents entirely, which matters if a parent might change job, leave, or retire.

Families with a parent nearing the end of a contract should think about this before it becomes urgent.

  • Parent route: simpler, tied to the parent's residence
  • University route: independent of the family
  • If the parent leaves, the student's status follows
  • Worth choosing deliberately rather than by default

The certificate is the document

Whichever route you take, the institution issues a certificate specifying the duration of study, and that is what the application rests on. Universities issue these routinely but not quickly, particularly around enrolment when everyone wants one at once.

Ask for it earlier than you need it.

  • Certificate from the university stating study duration
  • Requested from the registrar or student services
  • Slowest around enrolment periods
  • Ask early; it is a queue, not a decision

Students who excel

There is a separate golden visa route for outstanding students, which is a different and much longer proposition than a study-linked residence. Families rarely find out about it until after the results.

If your child is on track for strong results, it is worth asking about before the final year rather than after.

  • A distinct golden visa route exists for outstanding students
  • Far longer than a study-duration residence
  • Worth checking before results, not after
  • We have a separate page on it

How we handle a student visa

  1. Choose the sponsorUniversity or parent, deliberately.
  2. Get the certificateDuration of study, from the institution.
  3. Check the age positionParticularly for sons approaching 25.
  4. File the applicationThrough ICP or GDRFA as appropriate.
  5. Medical and Emirates IDThe standard residence sequence.
  6. Diarise the end dateSo the next step is not a scramble.

Which sponsorship route

The mistake we see most: Leaving a son's twenty-fifth birthday until it arrives. The date is known years in advance, the alternative routes take weeks, and families discover it during exam season when nobody has the attention to spare.
MSM tip: If the sponsoring parent is on a fixed-term contract that ends before the degree does, move the student to university sponsorship early. Doing it calmly in a summer break is a different experience from doing it in the fortnight after a parent's visa is cancelled.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Student's passport copy
Certificate from the university stating duration of study
The sponsoring parent's passport, visa and Emirates ID, if that route
The student's date of birth
Whether the parent's own residence has a fixed end date
Any existing UAE visa the student holds

Send the student's date of birth with everything else. For sons in particular it decides how long the current route has left, and that shapes the advice.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can sponsor a student visa in the UAE?
Either the accredited university or college the student attends, or a parent who is resident in the UAE.
Until what age can a parent sponsor a son?
Up to 25 while he is studying. After that he needs his own basis to stay, most often university sponsorship or employment.
Is it different for daughters?
Yes. A daughter can be sponsored regardless of age until she marries, so the age cut-off that applies to sons does not apply in the same way.
What document does the university provide?
A certificate specifying the duration of study. It is what the application rests on, and it is slowest to obtain around enrolment.
What if the sponsoring parent leaves the UAE?
The student's residence follows the parent's. Where a parent's contract ends before the degree does, moving to university sponsorship early is the calmer path.
My child has excellent results. Is there anything better?
There is a separate golden visa route for outstanding students, which is far longer than a study-linked residence. Ask before results, not after.
