What is the difference between a freelance permit and a freelance visa?

A freelance permit lets you work independently in your own name under a licensing authority. A freelance visa is the residence visa that can be sponsored through that permit. If you already hold residence through a spouse or employer you may need only the permit; if you need to live here on your own basis you need both.

Which do you actually need?

If you are already resident here — on a spouse visa, a golden visa, or employed elsewhere with permission to freelance — the permit alone may be enough, and that is a much smaller undertaking.

If you have no residence basis, you need the permit and then the visa sponsored through it. That is two stages and the second depends on the first.

Which authority should issue it?

It depends on your field. Media, technology, education and design each have free zones with activity lists built around them, and a permit issued by an authority whose list actually covers your work is worth more than the cheapest option.

What does the residence stage involve?

The familiar sequence: entry permit or status change, medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics, then stamping. Health insurance is a condition, and as a freelancer you arrange it yourself rather than receiving it from an employer.

Can you sponsor family on it?

Once you hold residence, family sponsorship follows the usual conditions, including income evidence. For a freelancer that evidence looks different from a salary certificate, and it is worth raising before you plan around it.

The mistake we see most: Freelancing on a spouse visa without any permit, on the assumption that residence is permission to work. It is not. The residence lets you live here; the permit lets you invoice. Clients who need a proper invoice will ask, and the gap is awkward to explain mid-project.
MSM tip: Check what your current employment contract says about outside work before applying for a permit. Some contracts prohibit it outright, and discovering that after the permit is issued is an expensive way to learn.

Is a freelance permit the same as a freelance visa?
No. The permit authorises the work; the visa authorises residence. If you already have residence another way, the permit alone may be enough.
Can I freelance on my wife visa?
You can live here on it, but you need a permit to work and invoice legally. The permit is the smaller job in that case, since residence is already sorted.
Which free zone should I use?
The one whose activity list actually covers your field. A cheap permit that does not describe your work is a false economy.
Can I freelance while employed?
Sometimes, with a permit and your employer permission. Check what your contract says first, because some prohibit outside work.
Can I sponsor my family on a freelance visa?
Once you hold residence, subject to the usual income and tenancy conditions. Income evidence for a freelancer looks different from a salary certificate.
