What is an Amer centre and do you need an appointment?

Amer centres are authorised service centres handling Dubai residency and immigration transactions on behalf of GDRFA: entry permits, visa stamping, status changes and cancellations. Many transactions can be submitted through authorised channels without the applicant attending in person.

Do you actually need to go?

Frequently not. A great many residency transactions can be submitted through an authorised channel with the documents rather than the person, and the applicant only attends where biometrics or a signature genuinely require it.

What is the difference from Tasheel?

Amer handles residency and immigration; Tasheel handles labour. An employment visa touches both, which is why people end up at both and assume they are interchangeable.

When is attendance genuinely required?

Biometric capture, some identity verifications, and occasionally where an authority requires the applicant to confirm something personally. Those are real and cannot be delegated.

Everything else is document submission, and document submission does not need you standing there.

What should you take if you do go?

Originals of everything, not photocopies, plus the Emirates ID of anyone involved and the sponsor documents where a sponsorship transaction is involved.

The mistake we see most: Taking a morning off work to queue for a transaction that could have been submitted on your behalf. Ask whether attendance is actually required before booking anything; the answer is no more often than people expect.
MSM tip: If you do have to attend, go early in the day and early in the week. Amer centres are busiest at month end and around public holidays, and a Tuesday morning is a different experience from a Thursday afternoon.
