Family Driver Visa
Sponsoring a personal or family driver in Dubai.
Deposit Recovery
Sponsors pay a refundable deposit and then never see it again, not because it was forfeited but because nobody told them they had to ask.
The deposit paid when sponsoring a domestic worker is refundable in principle, but it is not returned automatically when the visa ends. The sponsorship has to have been closed properly, with nothing outstanding against the file, and the refund then has to be claimed. Sponsors who cancel informally, or who let the visa lapse, commonly find the claim harder than it needed to be.
| Paid | When the domestic worker visa is issued |
|---|---|
| Refundable | In principle, once the file is clean |
| Requires | Proper cancellation, not a lapsed visa |
| Claimed by | The sponsor, after closure |
| Can be blocked by | Fines or an open dispute |
| Amount | Varies; confirmed against your own receipt |

Two reasons, and neither is that the money was taken. The first is that nobody claims it. The second is that the visa was never cancelled properly, so from the authority's point of view the sponsorship is still open and there is nothing to refund yet.
Both are fixable. The second one takes longer.
If your domestic worker has gone home, the visa still needs cancelling through the proper route rather than simply ending when she boarded the plane. That cancellation is what clears the file, and clearing the file is what makes the deposit claimable.
Doing it in the right order saves doing it twice.
Unsettled fines, an unresolved labour complaint, or a mismatch between the records and what actually happened. Where a worker absconded or a dispute was never closed, that has to be dealt with before anyone talks about money coming back.
Tell us the real history. It is not a moral judgement, it just changes the route.
The receipt from when the deposit was paid is worth locating before you start. Sponsors who can produce it have a much shorter conversation than sponsors reconstructing events from memory three years later.
Look before you assume it is gone.
| Situation | What has to happen |
|---|---|
| Visa cancelled properly, nothing outstanding | Claim can be filed now |
| Worker left, visa never cancelled | Cancel first, then claim |
| Fines outstanding on the file | Settle, then claim |
| Absconding report never closed | Resolve that first |
| Deposit receipt lost | Still worth pursuing; send what you have |
Tell us the real sequence of what happened, including anything awkward. It changes the route rather than the answer, and finding out halfway through wastes everybody's time.
