DMCC Company Setup in Dubai

DMCC is the free zone people choose when the address has to carry weight. It asks more of you in return, and for the wrong business that scrutiny is simply friction.

What is DMCC and who is it for?

DMCC is the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, a free zone based in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. It is the established home for commodities trading — gold, precious metals, tea, diamonds — and for companies that want a recognised Dubai business address. Its compliance expectations are higher than entry-level free zones.

Why do commodities businesses cluster here?

Because the infrastructure and the counterparties are already in place. DMCC was built around commodities trade, and for gold, precious metals, tea and diamonds that concentration means the people you need to deal with are already inside the same ecosystem.

For those sectors the free zone is not one option among many. It is the default.

  • Established commodities trading ecosystem
  • Sector-specific infrastructure and counterparties
  • Recognised internationally within those trades
  • Regulatory familiarity with commodity-specific requirements

What does the higher compliance bar mean in practice?

More scrutiny at application and more expected of you afterwards. Business plans are examined more seriously, shareholder backgrounds are looked at more closely, and sectors with money-laundering exposure — precious metals above all — carry additional obligations.

For a well-run business this is a feature, because it is part of why the address is worth something. For a company hoping to set up quickly and cheaply, it is friction with no upside.

  • More detailed application review than entry-level free zones
  • Closer examination of shareholders and business substance
  • Sector-specific obligations, particularly in precious metals
  • Ongoing compliance expectations after licensing

Is the address really worth it?

It depends entirely on who you sell to. A JLT address opens conversations with banks, international counterparties and larger corporate clients more easily than an entry-level free zone address does.

For a solo consultant with three retained clients, none of that is being tested, and the extra cost buys nothing.

  • Easier conversations with banks and larger counterparties
  • Recognised district with genuine business infrastructure
  • Cost only justified where the address is actually tested
  • Entry-level free zones remain sensible for small service firms

What does setting up involve?

A more substantial application than the entry-level free zones: name and activity approval, a business plan where the activity calls for it, shareholder due diligence, then licence, establishment card and visas.

Premises are taken within JLT, and the facility choice interacts with the visa allocation as it does elsewhere.

  • Trade name and activity approval
  • Application review, including shareholder due diligence
  • Premises within JLT
  • Licence, establishment card, then visa processing

How we set up a DMCC company

  1. We check the fit before applyingDMCC rewards substance. If the business is small and service-based, we will say an entry-level free zone serves you better.
  2. Activity and structureParticularly important for commodities, where the category drives the obligations that follow.
  3. Due diligence packShareholder documents and, where required, a business plan prepared properly rather than filed thin.
  4. Licence applicationSubmitted to DMCC with premises arranged in JLT.
  5. Establishment cardIssued after the licence, enabling visa processing.
  6. Visas, banking and complianceVisas per person, bank introductions, and a clear brief on ongoing obligations.

The mistake we see most: Applying to DMCC with a thin business plan because the application looked like a formality. It is not one, particularly in the commodity categories. A rejected or queried application costs weeks, and the fix is almost always detail that could have been supplied at the start.
MSM tip: If your activity touches precious metals, get advice on the compliance obligations before you licence, not after. They are ongoing rather than one-off, and businesses that discover them late find their operating assumptions were wrong.

What documents do you need?

What we need to start

Passport copies for every shareholder and director
Proof of residential address for each shareholder
Curriculum vitae for shareholders, where the activity requires it
Three trade name options
A description of the business and its trade flows
Attested parent-company documents, where a company is a shareholder

The item that most often causes a delay is a business plan that does not explain the actual trade flows. In commodity categories the authority wants to understand what moves, from where, to whom.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DMCC only for commodities companies?
No. It licenses service and trading companies too. But commodities is where its infrastructure and reputation are strongest, and where it is the obvious choice rather than one option among several.
Why is DMCC more expensive?
Premises in JLT and a more substantial application process. Whether that is worth paying for depends on whether the address and the compliance standing are actually tested by your customers and bankers.
Is the application harder?
It is more thorough. Shareholder due diligence is closer and, in commodity categories, the authority expects to understand the trade flows. A thin application gets queried.
Will a DMCC licence help with banking?
It tends to help, because the free zone is well understood by banks. It is not a guarantee — account opening still turns on your own documents and business substance.
Can a DMCC company trade on the mainland?
Not directly as a matter of course. Mainland distribution normally runs through an agent, distributor or a separate mainland entity.
Do I need premises in JLT?
Yes, a facility within the free zone, and the facility interacts with your visa allocation as at other free zones.
