Retiring in the UAE

UAE Retirement Visa

People assume retiring here means leaving. It does not, and the route that lets you stay is one of the least understood in the country.

Can you retire in the UAE on a residence visa?

Yes. There is a five-year residence route for retirees aged 55 and over with a substantial working history, qualifying on a financial basis rather than employment: property ownership, savings, or a steady income. The thresholds are set by the authorities and Dubai applies its own, higher, income test alongside the federal route, so which emirate you apply through changes the answer.

Three ways to qualify, and you need one

The financial test is met through property you own here, savings you hold, or a reliable ongoing income. You do not need all three, which is the thing people most often get wrong when they read a summary and count themselves out.

Which one you use changes the evidence entirely, so it is worth identifying yours before gathering anything.

  • Property ownership in the UAE
  • Savings held to a required level
  • A steady annual income
  • One route is enough; you are not asked for all three

Dubai is not the same as the federal route

This is the practical detail worth knowing before you start. Dubai operates its own retirement route with an income threshold set higher than the federal one, so an applicant who qualifies through ICP may not qualify through Dubai on the same income.

Where you live and where you apply are separate questions, and getting them the right way round can decide the outcome.

  • Dubai applies a higher income threshold
  • The federal route runs through ICP
  • Qualifying on one does not mean qualifying on the other
  • Worth choosing the route deliberately

Five years, then the basis is looked at again

Renewal is not a formality. Whatever you qualified on has to still hold, so a property sold, savings drawn down, or an income stream that has ended all matter at the five-year mark rather than passing unnoticed.

That sounds obvious written down. It surprises people who spent the intervening years assuming residence was settled.

  • The qualifying route is re-examined at renewal
  • Selling the property you qualified on changes your position
  • Savings drawn down over five years can fall short
  • Worth reviewing a year out, not a month out

The parts people forget

Health insurance valid in the UAE is required, and premiums at this age are a real cost rather than a formality. If you currently have cover through an employer, price the replacement before you resign.

Your existing residence also has to be handled properly rather than allowed to lapse into the new one.

  • UAE-valid health insurance is required
  • Premiums rise sharply with age; price it early
  • The existing residence has to be closed or converted properly
  • Dependants need their own plan

Which retirement route fits

Currently on an employment visaPlan the handover before resigning
The mistake we see most: Resigning first and looking at the retirement route afterwards. Your employment visa ends on a grace period, health cover ends with it, and you are assembling a financial application against a deadline you created yourself.
MSM tip: Get a health insurance quote for your own age band before you commit to anything else. It is the cost people most underestimate at this stage, and it occasionally changes the whole decision about whether staying makes sense.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retire in the UAE?
Yes. There is a five-year residence route for applicants aged 55 and over who qualify financially through property, savings or income rather than through employment.
Do I need all three financial conditions?
No, one is enough. People read a summary listing all three and count themselves out unnecessarily.
Is the retirement visa renewable?
Yes, after five years, but the basis you qualified on is looked at again. A property sold or savings drawn down in the meantime can change your position, so it is worth reviewing a year ahead.
Is Dubai different from the rest of the UAE?
Yes. Dubai applies a higher income threshold than the federal route, so qualifying through one does not mean qualifying through the other.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes, valid in the UAE, and premiums at this age are a significant cost. Get a quote early; it sometimes changes the decision.
Can my spouse stay with me?
Sponsorship of a spouse is part of the planning rather than automatic. Tell us who is staying and we will build it into the sequence.
