Labour Contract Renewal in Dubai

The labour contract is the version of the job the government holds. When it stops matching what the person actually does, renewal is the moment to fix it.

How is a labour contract renewed in Dubai?

The employer files the renewal through MoHRE alongside the work permit renewal, with the contract terms confirmed and signed by both parties. The registered contract should reflect the actual salary, role and terms, and both sides receive a copy of what is registered.

Why does the registered version matter?

Because it is the contract an authority looks at if there is ever a dispute. A side agreement about a higher salary, an allowance or different hours has considerably less weight than the version formally registered.

Employees signing a registered contract showing less than they were promised are in a weaker position than they realise.

  • It is what an authority relies on in a dispute
  • Side agreements carry less weight
  • Employees should read what they sign
  • Employers should register the real terms

What should be updated at renewal?

Salary where it has changed, job title where the role has moved, and any change in terms that has happened informally over the contract period. Renewal is the natural correction point.

Rolling forward last cycle wording because it is easier is how a record drifts several years away from reality.

  • Salary changes since the last cycle
  • Job title where the role has changed
  • Working hours or terms varied informally
  • Correct at renewal rather than rolling forward

What about the Wage Protection System?

The salary registered in the contract is what WPS payments are checked against. A mismatch between the registered salary and what is actually paid through WPS creates a compliance problem for the employer.

That is a practical reason to keep the contract accurate rather than a merely administrative one.

  • WPS payments checked against the registered salary
  • A mismatch is an employer compliance issue
  • Keep the contract and payroll aligned
  • Correct both together, not one at a time

What does the employee need to understand?

What they are signing. The contract sets notice periods, leave entitlement, end-of-service basis and the salary that gratuity will be calculated from, and those matter most at the end of the relationship rather than the beginning.

A contract signed without reading is the document you will wish you had read.

  • Notice period and leave entitlement
  • The salary gratuity is calculated on
  • End-of-service basis
  • Read it before signing, not after

How we handle contract renewal

  1. We compare record with realityWhat the contract says against what the job now is.
  2. Terms confirmedSalary, title and conditions agreed by both sides.
  3. Contract preparedReflecting the actual arrangement.
  4. Filed with the permit renewalAs one cycle rather than two errands.
  5. Signatures collectedBoth parties, with copies to each.
  6. WPS alignment checkedSo payroll and the registered salary match.

What to review at renewal

Common drift between contract and reality
ItemWhy it drifts
SalaryRaises given but never re-registered
Job titlePromotions not reflected
Working hoursArrangements changed informally
AllowancesAdded or removed over time
Leave entitlementCompany policy changed
The mistake we see most: Registering a lower salary than is actually paid, usually to reduce a fee somewhere. It creates a WPS mismatch for the employer and it undercuts the employee gratuity, and it is exactly the sort of thing that surfaces during a dispute when neither party wants the scrutiny.
MSM tip: Give every employee a copy of their registered contract, in a language they read, at the point it is renewed. It costs nothing, it prevents a category of dispute, and remarkably few companies do it.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Trade licence and establishment card
The current registered labour contract
Employee passport, visa and Emirates ID
Current salary and any changes agreed
Job title and any change to the role
Work permit expiry date

Send the current salary as actually paid, not as last registered. Where they differ, that gap is the thing to correct and it affects WPS as well as the contract.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a labour contract renew?
Alongside the work permit, as one cycle. Filing them separately is more work for no benefit.
Does the registered salary matter?
Yes. It is what WPS payments are checked against and what end-of-service is calculated from. A mismatch is a real compliance issue.
Can we update the job title at renewal?
Yes, and you should where the role has changed. Renewal is the natural correction point.
Should employees get a copy?
Yes, in a language they read. It costs nothing and prevents a category of dispute.
What if the contract does not match what was agreed?
Raise it before signing. The registered version is what an authority relies on, and a side agreement carries much less weight.
Do free zone companies use MoHRE?
No, the free zone authority handles contracts for its own companies.
