Corporate Tax Registration Certificate in the UAE

Three different documents get called "the tax certificate", and the one your bank wants is rarely the one you were sent.

What is a corporate tax registration certificate?

It is the document confirming a company is registered for UAE corporate tax, carrying its tax registration number. It is issued through the Federal Tax Authority portal. It is not the same as a VAT registration certificate, nor as a tax residency certificate used for double taxation treaty purposes.

Which certificate does the person asking actually want?

Ask them. A bank onboarding a corporate account, a client running supplier due diligence and a foreign tax authority applying a treaty all want different documents, and all three will say "your tax certificate".

Five minutes establishing which one is wanted saves a fortnight of sending the wrong document back and forth.

  • Corporate tax certificate: proves registration
  • VAT certificate: proves VAT registration and TRN
  • Tax residency certificate: for treaty relief
  • Ask the requester which they need

What is a tax residency certificate for?

For claiming relief under a double taxation treaty, typically where income arises in another country and you want that country to apply the treaty rate. It is issued on application and it is entirely separate from proving you are registered here.

If your counterparty is overseas and mentions withholding tax, this is probably the document in question.

  • Used for double taxation treaty relief
  • Relevant where income arises abroad
  • Applied for separately from registration
  • Withholding tax queries usually mean this one

Why does the registration number matter so much?

Because it is what everyone else validates you against. Clients record it, banks check it, and invoices in some contexts carry it. An incorrect digit propagates quietly through a client accounting system and surfaces as a payment problem.

Check it against the certificate rather than against a colleague email.

  • Used for validation by banks and clients
  • Recorded in counterparty accounting systems
  • A transcription error propagates silently
  • Verify against the certificate itself

What if you cannot access the portal?

That is the usual reason a company cannot produce its own certificate: the account was set up by someone who has left, and nobody has the credentials or the authorised signatory rights.

It is recoverable, and it is worth fixing before a bank asks rather than during an onboarding with a deadline.

  • Access commonly lost when staff leave
  • Authorised signatory details may need updating
  • Recoverable, but not instantly
  • Fix it before someone urgently needs the document

How we handle a certificate request

  1. We identify which document is wantedBy asking what the requester actually needs it for.
  2. Portal access checkWhether your company can still reach its own account.
  3. Access restored where neededSignatory and credential issues resolved.
  4. Certificate obtainedDownloaded and checked for accuracy.
  5. Residency certificate, if that is the needApplied for separately.
  6. HandoverThe correct document, with the number verified.

Which document do you need?

By who is asking
Who is askingUsually wants
A UAE bank onboarding your accountCorporate tax registration certificate
A client running supplier due diligenceRegistration certificate, sometimes VAT too
An overseas payer mentioning withholdingTax residency certificate
A tender processRegistration certificate, often with the licence
Your own accountantThe registration number itself
The mistake we see most: Sending a VAT certificate when the bank asked for the corporate tax one, then waiting two weeks for the rejection to come back. The documents look similar and carry different numbers. Confirm which is wanted before sending anything.
MSM tip: Make sure at least two people in the company have authorised access to the tax portal. Losing access when a finance manager leaves is the single most common reason a company cannot produce its own certificate on demand.

What documents do you need?

What we need

Trade licence
Corporate tax registration details, if you have them
Authorised signatory passport and Emirates ID
What the requester has actually asked for
Portal access details, if available
The country involved, for a residency certificate

The information that saves the most time is a copy of the request itself. What the bank or client wrote tells us which document they mean far better than a paraphrase.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a corporate tax registration certificate?
The document confirming your company is registered for UAE corporate tax, carrying its registration number. It is obtained through the Federal Tax Authority portal.
Is it the same as a VAT certificate?
No. VAT registration is separate with its own number and its own certificate. They are frequently confused.
What is a tax residency certificate?
A different document again, used to claim relief under a double taxation treaty where income arises abroad.
My bank asked for a tax certificate. Which one?
Usually the corporate tax registration certificate, but ask them. Sending the wrong one costs weeks.
We lost access to the FTA portal. Can you help?
Yes. It usually comes down to authorised signatory details after someone left. It is recoverable, though not instantly.
Do I need a certificate to invoice?
Not generally, but clients often record your registration number during onboarding. Get the number right at that point.
